Story Name:

The race to save Mockingbird

Synopsis

New Avengers (2010 series) #11 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Continuing with the split-time storylines.

In the present the New Avengers have broken up an attempt by Norman Osborn's HAMMER Agents to reform in Rhode Island under the leadership of Superia. It was a tougher battle than they expected but the Avengers won. However Superia escaped and Mockingbird was shot in the stomach.

Now paramedics have brought her to Barrington Hospital and Dr Strange, Spider-Man and Thing have followed. The doctors understand that she's an Avenger without superpowers and they have to try emergency resuscitation. The Avengers feel helpless and Thing suggests they should tell her ex-husband.

In 1959 the President charged Nick Fury with assembling a team to be known as the Avengers Initiative. With the help of Dum-Dum Dugan he roped in Victor Creed (Sabretooth), Dominic Fortune, Kraven (Sergei Kravinoff), Namora, Ulysses Bloodstone and Ernst Sablinov (the 1st Silver Sable).

Dum-Dum's done his bit but the others are now gathered in the back room of a bar in Helsingborg, Sweden where Red Skull has been seen building a new Reich. 2 US undercover agents died getting that information. The team assume more infiltration is required and some vie to be the 1 to do it. But Fury tells them they were picked because they are fighters and some have powers. They are now Avengers to avenge everyone killed by the 3rd Reich, and to stop it happening again. Some of them have done questionable things but now they have the opportunity to do the right thing. Creed isn't impressed but he's in anyway. Fury and some of the others have been Nazi hunters already.

Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones, Ms Marvel and Wolverine are still at the battle-site where a SWAT team are taking away the HAMMER troops. Logan is only just recovering from injuries inflicted by Superia and Jess has to stop the cops arresting *him* as well. Carol Danvers is also recovering and can't believe how powerful Superia was, for someone she's hardly heard of. A HAMMER guy chooses that moment to boast that she's going to make HAMMER great again, until Cage punches him in the mouth to shut him up. Jess tells Logan and Carol how Bobbi Morse is injured, and DrS teleports his trio there to tell all that it's as bad as they feared and their friend is in touch-and-go surgery. Danny Rand opines that they should tell Steve Rogers what happened. Spidey adds that they should tell him they were set up. The others don't get what he means until he points out that they were alerted to the situation by their liaison with Rogers, Victoria Hand, who was coincidentally Osborn's right-hand lady who helped create HAMMER.

In 1959 the men of Fury's team are staking out Red Skull's base which is surrounded by uniformed troops. Creed alerts them to a truck heading there and he runs out in front of it and allows himself to get knocked over. But his healing factor takes care of any damage and when the lone driver comes over to investigate he kills him with his claws. Then Sablinov takes the uniform and drives the truck to its destination. He tells the guards that the driver they expected fell ill, but they're suspicious and tell him to open the back of the truck. Ernst protests that he was told to deliver it to the the 'commander' himself, but complies ...

... and the other men leap out with guns blazing. As they mow down the Nazis (and Creed shrugs off bullets that hit him) someone reports the attack to Fuhrer Red Skull. Our guys toss grenades into the foe while some of them suggest to Fury it's time for the next move. He contacts Namora who then arrives surfing a tidal wave on the back of a whale.

In the present at Avengers Tower Commander Rogers tells Victoria Hand to explain what happened to Hawkeye (who of course is Bobbi's ex-hubby). She reminds him that HAMMER was populated by SHIELD extremists and ex-Hydra and AIM. Osborn may be in jail but many of his followers still believe in his 'dream', and she warned Steve that HAMMER would rise again. She was covertly invited to join them and told where they were based. So she sent the New Avengers in. The 'soldiers' have been rounded up but the leader Superia got away. And Mockingbird was a casualty. Steve tells Clint Barton that Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman) is ready with a quinjet to take him to the hospital. After he's left Rogers agrees with Hand that HAMMER will figure out she's a 'traitor'. But she says that the Avengers will think she set them up. Steve dismisses that as only applying to Wolverine, but she believes that most of them will.

Back in 1959 Victor Creed 'persuades' 1 of the soldiers to tell them where Red Skull is. But when they gets there they find his HQ on fire to destroy all evidence, and the Skull gone. But in his place they find Captain America.

Story #2

Avengers Assemble - the oral history of the Earth's mightiest heroes Chapter 16

Writer: Brian Michael Bendis. Penciler/Inker: .

Synopsis

By Rob Johnson
Rating: 3.5 stars
In the subsequent book this is renamed Chapter 18.

Illustrations are by Stuart Immonen and Jack Kirby & Dan Adkins & Tom Smith.

This follows from Chapter 15 (17) in Avengers #11 which mainly covers the Avengers/Defenders War (Av#115-118 and Def#8-11) but mentions a fight with Magneto (#110) and the arrival of Mantis & Swordsman (#114).

The Celestial Madonna saga (#123-135) is vaguely referred to in the intro here. But the chapter itself is mainly about the induction of Patsy Walker as Hellcat during the Serpent Crown affair (#141-149) and the public interest in the recruitment drive in #150-151 It mentions her interest in superheroes, and her taking over the costume of the Cat (now Tigra). (But it doesn't mention that she effectively blackmailed Beast in his Amazing Adventures series into introducing her to the team.)

To be concluded in Avengers #12 with Chapter 17 (19) mainly covering the Korvac Saga (#167-177).
The book has an extra Chapter 20 about the Ultron's creation of Jocasta (#161-162) and the 'true' origin of the Scarlet Witch (#185-187).

Review / Commentaries

New Avengers (2010 series) #11 Review by (January 25, 2025)
Howard Chaykin and Edgar Delgado did the 1959 stuff again.

We'll find out next issue that the 1959 Red Skull and Captain America are impostors.

Commander Steve Rogers appears here after Secret Avengers stuff culminating in the Captain America & Secret Avengers 1-shot and then some off-screen apps in the Widowmaker mini-series.
After this he'll guest-star in Avengers Academy #11.

Hawkeye has also come here from Widowmaker and he'll hang around for the next 2 issues.
After which he'll also guest-star in AvAc#11.

Spider-Woman is behind the scenes here but she'll be in the next 2 issues as well. She's here from her day job in Avengers #7-12. (That's where Hawkeye's usually to be found too.)
