New Avengers #16 Review by (September 14, 2021)

Review: “This man has sacrificed everything to try to make this city safer.” Thus sayeth Luke Cage and he is right. Daredevil started out as a cheerful Spider-Man imitation (almost said clone, which is a bad word to use around Spider-Man) but later writers, especially Frank Miller and Peter David would make him the darkest and grimmest of heroes, with a record number of dying love interests (no refrigerators, thankfully). It’s nice to see this semi-popular hero get some appreciation and this issue is ideal. They ask what makes a person worthy to be an Avenger and answer it with Daredevil. There are also some spectacular two-page action sequences and for once, the oral history gimmick actually works, Cage and Jessica Jones and Squirrel Girl giving their input on DD. A clever touch was to show a succession of heroes all dissing the next guy in line, only to have them turn around and praise that person for overcoming their limitations to be an Avengers. And now DD is one of them. Yeah, I know a hero doesn’t have to be an Avenger to be cool and heroic—look how long Spider-Man was a loner before he was recruited.

Comments: FEAR ITSELF tie-in: story takes place during Sin’s siege of Manhattan in FEAR ITSELF #4 and simultaneously with AVENGERS (2010) #14. Cameos by Spider-Man, Wolverine, Protector, Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Spider-Woman. Issue includes reprinted material from 2001 commemorating the tenth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. And note: Ms. Marvel and Iron Fist appear on the cover but are not in the story.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

New Avengers #16 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Hawkeye talks to the Avengers oral history project on the important topic of “Who is worthy to be an Avenger?” and other heroes add their two cents and then Hawkeye suggests that it isn’t always obvious….

Daredevil is in Manhattan when Sin’s Nazi war machines attack; he leaps into action, his spectacular moves taking out a machine and then vanishing once another thinks it has killed him. He seizes a machine gun from a damaged Nazi and shoots down more. And then he hears Avengers Tower fall. And then he remembers that there’s a baby at Avengers Mansion. He rushes there to find the building besieged by the enemy. Squirrel Girl is inside, protecting Dani Cage when it all suddenly stops—the damage to the building; Doreen hears what sounds like the Nazi machines fighting each other and then…silence. She peeks outside and the enemy machines are down. Daredevil enters and leads her to safety in the underground bunker….

Three weeks later, DD is approached by Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, thanking him for protecting their baby. As a gesture of gratitude, Luke gives DD a membership card in the Avengers, with Braille, of course. He tries to turn it down but ends up an Avenger….
