Synopsis

New Mutants (2009 series) #31 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Dani “Mirage” Moonstar has been swallowed whole by one of the Draumir and she can see its history: his name was Bonegrinder and he was one of the foot soldiers of Cul Borson, the Serpent and in that final battle with Odin and his army and they were all killed…

…and now Dani is on an island of meat and bone, floating in a sea of stomach acid….

The other New Mutants have arrived on the icy outskirts of the Norse underworld Hel, teleported there by Mephisto (last issue), and see the great citadel besieged by monsters. Aware that Dani will be in the middle of the action they head there and discover the Draumir are dream monsters which feed on the souls of the dead. The Mutants join in the battle, giving good account when Kaw the raven steals Cypher’s badge and delivers it to Dani inside Bonegrinder. Aware that her friends must be right outside, she slashes her way out to join them. Dani tells them that since the Draumir are undead they can only fight a holding action until Hela can devise a way to defeat them permanently. Dani summons her flying horse Brightwing and others of his herd to carry them all to Hela’s palace, intending to make their stand there…but as they approach they see Hela’s corpse impaled on the hall’s spire….

Review / Commentaries

New Mutants (2009 series) #31 Review by (April 15, 2025)

Review: Some nightmarish imagery as the team is now reunited and ready to take on the monsters. But then this is part of an epic tale of fear so it’s to be expected. The issue feels like a placeholder, moving us from the big events of parts 1 and 2 to the big climax in part 4 but it’s still enjoyable with the authors’ crisp and comical dialogue.

Comments: Issue bannered FEAR ITSELF, as a tie-in to that event. Part three of four parts. Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #5 and 6. Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Issue includes “Moment of Truth,” reprinted from MOMENT OF SILENCE as a memorial on occasion of the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks.
