Synopsis

New Mutants (2009 series) #30 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Dani Moonstar, reunited with her winged horse Brightwing, flies to Hel to find Hela, guided by a raven she calls Kaw. And she comes upon a multitude of the shades of the dead, fleeing the crisis in Hel (one L) and asking her help…

Meanwhile, the other New Mutants (Sunspot, Magma, Cypher, X-Man, Warlock) have ended up in Hell (two Ls), greeted by a sardonic Mephisto. Sunspot warns them all not to listen to their host while the others bicker. Mephisto denies being responsible for their arrival while X-Man insists they are in an alternate timeline, not another realm, and Cypher agonizes about his mistake that landed them there. Mephisto offers reasonable terms for how they can escape, saying, “So…how much do you need my help right now?” He outlines how they are in a hopeless situation and when Sunspot tries to fight, he transforms into a massive monster, seizing him with his tongue…and Magma flies into a fiery rage to demand his release. Mephisto is impressed and he makes his offer: He will release them, even transporting them to Hel (one L) if she agrees to a date with him. She agrees and they vanish….

The shades of the dead tell Dani about the Draumir who have invaded Hel, embodiments of the dark dreams of the Serpent. So Dani heads to the battle zone and, despite her fear, she challenges the army of ugly monsters, swinging her sword. And then a sharklike monster creeps up behind her and chomps her up whole….

Review / Commentaries

New Mutants (2009 series) #30 Review by (April 8, 2025)

Review: Aw, they went and did it. They’ve turned the fearsome and powerful Mephisto into a clone of every other villain since Hannibal Lecter, cultured and sardonic. I realize this is one of the most entertaining ways to write a villain but they are all looking alike now. Loki, Mister Sinister, Nightmare, and now Mephisto have all been turned into he stereotype, as though Marvel is trying to establish that every Big Bad must be played by Tom Hiddleston. Otherwise, the Mephisto/Mutants interplay is very sharp, overwhelming Dani’s big battle scenes but that’s the nature of the game. Very cool issue.

Comments: Issue bannered FEAR ITSELF, as a tie-in to that event. Part two of four parts. Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #5 and 6. Mephisto quotes “Sympathy for the Devil” by the Rolling Stones. Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Chris Sotomayor contributed to the colors.
