Synopsis

New Mutants (2009 series) #29 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Hela walks the walls of Hel until she discovers her realm has been invaded by huge monsters. She demands to know who they are and they size her, sending a flock of ravens into the sky….

Dani “Mirage” Moonstar is flying a Blackbird jet to Hel, hoping to gain the help of Hela, whom she served as a Valkyrie. Dani is having second thoughts about leaving the battleground in San Francisco but Cyclops assures her that her contribution will be important. Then her radio is filled with cries of “help” and “Hela” as she flies through the flock of ravens, shattering the windshield and forcing her to eject….

Back at Utopia, her fellow New Mutants (Sunspot, Magma, Cypher, X-Man, Warlock) are concerned for her. They don’t understand why (according to Cerebro) she vanished in the Sierra Nevada Mountains while flying away from San Francisco. Cypher deduces she was on a mission sanctioned by Cyclops, likely having to do with Dani’s Norse connections. Concerned about her, her friends consult the imprisoned Magik, who promises to reveal what she knows….

Dani awakens in the hills, accompanied by a single raven cawing for help; it leads her to her winged horse Brightwind and her sword….

Magik reveals that Dani was on her way to Hel (the Norse afterlife) not the Judeo-Christian Hell and suggests a spell that can get them there. Cypher, the language expert thinks he can figure it all out, due to his mutant ability…

…and so Cypher collects the needed papers and follows the directions, works out the incantation—and they end up in Hell, greeted by Mephisto….

New Mutants (2009 series) #29 Review by (April 1, 2025)

Review: And here’s the surprise: the New Mutants will not be joining the X-Men in their battle against Juggernaut, possessed by Kuurth, Breaker of Stone, but heading off on a strange tangent of their own, Mirage to play Valkyrie and the rest to bicker with the Devil. And it’s all quite entertaining, freed from the Big Supervillain gets Bigger and smashes the world, that just cries out for some creativity. So let’s jump in…

Comments: Issue bannered FEAR ITSELF, as a tie-in to that event. Part one of four parts. Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #5 and 6, simultaneously with UNCANNY X-MEN #540-543. First appearance of the Draumar. Cameos by Colossus, Hope Summers, Magneto, and Kitty Pryde, not to mention the possessed Juggernaut. Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. And oddly, Magma is called Karma on the first page, corrected in the subsequent issues.
