Savage Avengers #5 Review by (September 16, 2022)
The pre-epilogue end of this issue clears some things up. When Conan was brought to the present *again* at the end of the previous series it seemed to suggest that this was Conan at the end of his Hyborian career. But at the time I commented that he seemed like the much younger Cimmerian. The montage of images of his future at the end of this issue makes it clear that this *is* a young Conan. But on the other hand his return to the Hyborian Age again now means that he can't go on from the present to become the immortal Conan 2099.

However the 2099 universe is I believe an alternate future anyway so its Conan wouldn't come from Earth-616's present. But this still means that it's possible for Conan 2099 to join the team. On the other hand nothing revealed about the next 2 issues suggests this will happen.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Savage Avengers #5 Synopsis by Rob Johnson
Conan was brought back from the present to the Hyborian Age by a Deathlok, and a bunch of other superheroes were brought along for the ride. Deathlok was trying to kill Conan for crimes against the timestream and had to also fight all the others. But now DL has recovered his memories of being (a) Miles Morales/Spider-Man, just in time to switch sides to face common enemy Thulsa Doom, who has cut Conan's throat and mingled their blood in order to bring his serpent-god the demon Set to Earth.

Elektra/Daredevil now swears vengeance on behalf of her team. The invisible Deathlok makes himself visible and fires into the mouth of Set and deputizes them all into the Deathlok army. They don't know whether to trust him. But he lets the power of his gamma battery course through Weapon H, currently in the form of the super-intelligent but weak Leader, transforming him into an amalgam of gamma-beings including Red Hulk and Harpy (plus his regular adamantium claws). He attacks Set directly while Black Knight, Cloak and Elektra fight the Set cultists.

Anti-Venom and Dagger have a moment together before joining the fray and Flash Thompson kisses Tandy Bowen before it's too late. He's inspired to turn his symbiote into a wolf-form as he joins Weapon H in the frontal assault. Cloak sees his chance of rekindling love with his partner Dagger fade and she too takes on cultists.

Black Knight's photon-sword loses power, and his mystic Ebony Blade is back in the present. At his request Elektra takes a moment to toss him Thulsa Doom's ceremonial sword with which he'd done the blood sacrifice. As he hoped the magic blade empowers him like his own Blade would, and he uses that power to transform into the Bloodwraith (which he normally strenuously avoids). And in this form he steals the souls of those he kills.

Meanwhile Deathlok has been trying *his* blade against 2 other swords wielded by Thulsa Doom, coated in eldritch green flame. And Dagger has broken off combat to try another tactic. She rushes to the side of dying Conan and uses her healing light to bring him back. DL is faring badly when the revivified Cimmerian leaps in to tackle his foe.

The Cult Of Set are all down and Elektra talks Dane Whitman down from his bloodlust. She knows how it feels to be a weapon not a person. But Set himself is still undefeated by Anti-Venom and Weapon H. Dagger rejoins her partner Cloak and they combine their powers to form a chain of light with which to tie up the demon.

Thulsa Doom holds Conan and Deathlok at bay. He buries 1 ensorcelled blade in the Barbarian's shoulder and then turns his attention to the cyborg. DL's metal blade fails to affect the sorcerer. But then Conan pulls the magic blade out of his own shoulder and chops it into Doom. And the wizard from an even earlier age dissolves into dust.

Now only Set remains to be dealt with, and this brings us to an ending which I can't really make hang together. Deathlok plans to use his time-jump capability to send Set outside of time. But when he tries to pass through the portal the demon came from he finds he can't use it because it's magic. Conan realises that the portal was created using his and Thulsa Doom's blood, so only *he* can close it. He uses some handy chains to start to pull the *physical* gate apart as Miles Morales prepares to time-jump with the others. They disappear as the Cimmerian pulls the gate apart. And he's left alone to face his Hyborian future.

In an epilogue the team arrive elsewhen. Weapon H discovers that he can't revert to his human form as Clay Cortez. Black Knight thinks that his brief time as Bloodwraith has change him too. And Tandy rushes to the side of Flash rather than her partner Tyrone Johnson. And on top of that Deathlok is attacked by Jake Gallows, Punisher 2099, who's surprised to encounter a sentient DL.
