Synopsis

Savage Avengers #8 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
Deathlok (Miles Morales) has timejumped the team from the Hyborian Age but wound up in a version of 2099 run by Ultron and a Deathlok army. They teamed up with Punisher 2099 (Jake Gallows), liberated some weapons from the ruins of Avengers Mansion and rescued Doctor Doom 2099 from prison.

But we start with a flashback to 2091 where Ultron captured Doom 2099 but he triggered a backup plan - an army of Doombots to continue the fight against the Deathloks. That battle is still waging around Latveria as Punisher flies an Avengers quinjet there. Doom intends to retrieve his time-array gauntlet and use it to go back and stop the rise of Ultron.

Daredevil (Elektra) takes time out to warn Gallows that being Punisher was bad for the original. Jake doesn't care - he's already lost everything that matters to him and now he just wants to take as many Deathloks as he can with him before he dies. Anti-Venom (Flash Thompson) admires Deathlok's big gun but then hands over some Spider-Man web shooters to the ex-Spidey.

Suddenly 1 of Ultron's Deathloks shoots the quinjet down. Weapon H holds the plane together but the blast has concussed Cloak so he can't teleport them out. Doom makes his own escape before Punisher crashlands them.

Black Knight climbs out of the wreckage with Anti-Venom and Dagger supporting Cloak. But they are immediately attacked by Deathloks, including tanks. Tyrone Johnson tries to tell Tandy Bowen that he still loves her but he's interrupted by Doom coming to the rescue.

Inside the quinjet Punisher has been pierced by a titanium strut but he pulls it free and joins Deathlok, Elektra and Weapon H in their own escape. But *they* are attacked by 1 of Doom's defence forces, giant Ultimo the Ultimate Doombot. WH slings Elektra at some exposed wiring on the damaged bot which she slashes with her sais. The robot blasts at them all so invisibility-cloaked Miles swings into action on a web-line and Ultimo falls.

Doom now joins them with his half of the team and leads them all to the fortress-tomb of his old foe Tiger Wylde, which he reveals is where he stashed the time-gauntlet. He confidently starts to bypass Wylde's security but unexpectedly gets a massive neural feedback shot which takes him out of play.

Ultron shows himself with the gauntlet in his possession. Elektra tells Punisher to guard Miles/Deathlok (the only 1 of them who can timejump) as she launches herself at the big bad ... who rips her heart out. Miles and Punisher fire their big guns at him, and he responds by blasting them with his energy spear. Weapon H's adamantium claws have no effect but Ultron causes the nanobots in his blood to go out of control. Anti-Venom attacks but Flash gets flash-fried. Distraught Dagger drops her guard as Ulty's spear heads towards her back ... but Cloak steps in to take it instead. As he dies he finally confesses his love. But without his Darkforce to hold her energy in check she takes AV's Venom symbiote instead and the combination lashes out at Ultron's Deathloks. However the robot calls down a strike from an orbiting satellite which destroys her. Black Knight is left and he now reveals that he secretly took his old Ebony Blade from Avengers Mansion ... which now turns him into the Bloodwraith. But Ultron breaks the sword and kills its bearer. Only Deathlok and Punisher manage to sneak away.

Later in Alchemax Tower Ultron's computer bank examines the time-gauntlet and promises to get it working soon. Meanwhile he uses vats of the nanothech Formula-D to turn the bodies of the Savage Avengers into Deathlok cyborgs to serve him.

Review / Commentaries

Savage Avengers #8 Review by (December 16, 2022)
Dr Doom claims that the time-array gauntlet is what originally brought him to 2099. This doesn't tie in with the original Doom 2099 series where he just woke up in 2099 and we never found out how he got there. And he wasn't there in 2091.

The Ultimo Doombot is obviously modelled on the Marvel Age Ultimo robot.

Tiger Wylde was Doom's opponent in the 1st 4 issues of Doom 2099. He had taken over Latveria but he died in #4. An android version didn't fare any better in #22-24.

Noticeably Ultron doesn't turn Doom 2099 into a Deathlok at the end.
