Synopsis

Tales of the Marvels: Wonder Years #1 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Cindy Knutz, the newest member of the Wonder Man Fan Club—L.A. Chapter, holds the group spellbound as she tells how Wonder Man once saved her life: When the giant robot Red Ronin was terrorizing New York, she was about to be stepped on when Wondy swooped down and snatched her away. He told her to “Be brave” and took off again. She followed the trail of destruction and found Simon lying in a vacant lot; she helped him up, thanked her, and left and then she realized she was holding onto his red shades, which she shows the club.

Later, talking to Bernie Sedaka, the Club President, she tells how she believes she is meant to meet Wonder Man again, because of the bond between them. Cindy recalls how, when the West Coast Avengers were formed and Wonder Man joined the team, she told her parents in New Jersey she wanted to move to LA to be near him and they refused so she ran away to California. Once there, she took a job at Starsigns, a company that specializes in celebrity autographs; one day, Simon Williams’ girlfriend, Ginger Beach, came in and Cindy saw Simon sitting in his car outside; she tried to muster the courage to go out and talk to him but he and Ginger left before that could happen.

Then Simon Williams arranges to address the Club and Bernie buys red contact lenses to mimic his eyes—and then news comes that the West Coast Avengers are disbanding. Cindy and Bernie go out to their ruined compound to look for souvenirs when first, Vision and Black Widow arrive and then Wonder Man with the Scarlet Witch, his current romantic partner, come. Cindy again tries to approach Simon—but a Kree landing craft alights and there is a battle and Wonder Man is killed….

Tales of the Marvels: Wonder Years #1 Review by (June 27, 2023)

Review: A sad and moving entry in the Marvels canon centers on an obsessive fan, Cindy Knutz (“with a kay”), who feels an imaginary bond with a superhero, in this case, Wonder Man, and will do anything to contact him, except, of course, actually contacting him. Adoration is hindered by the instinctive knowledge that she is courting rejection in an area she has chosen to define herself. Cindy is a sad and hopeless little girl who doesn’t yet know this. And as her foil there’s Bernie Sedaka, just as deluded but with less restraint to it; when she crashes, she will crash. A very poignant entry in this classic series with only one flaw: giving the central character a silly name, like “Knutz.” Feh.

Comments: Tie-in to MARVELS. Book is part of the Marvel Select line with heavier covers and better production values than the usual comics. First appearance of Cindy Knutz. The Avengers fought Red Ronin in AVENGERS #198. The Kree attack in which Wonder Man was killed took place in FORCE WORKS #1. Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning.
