With Thor, Iron Man, Giant-Man and Wasp having quit the Avengers (in the previous issue), Captain America finds himself the leader of a team of rookies--Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. He suggests that they search for the Hulk as a means of uniting them as a team, unaware that Hulk is a prisoner of the Leader. The Mole Man sends a giant robot to invade their headquarters and lure them into a trap by reporting that the Hulk is in the southwest. They destroy the robot and head out to the desert where they are pulled into the villains underground lair. The Avengers confront and defeat the deadly Minotaur and Mole Man's minions, and in a panic their enemy sends them back to the surface.

Having been tested in battle, the new Avengers have proved they can work together as a team. Meanwhile, Bruce Banner lies dead, victim of a soldiers bullet...

Review / Commentaries

The Avengers #17 Review by (February 15, 2010)
Hulk does not encounter the Avengers. Events take place concurrently with Tales to Astonish #69.

The Avengers #17 Review by (April 18, 2013)
This issue sees the start of the friction between the male team members that will be a feature of this foursome. But it also spotlights Captain America's leadership abilities, and the beginning of the Avengers' teamwork. Mole Man was one of the villains promising to come after the Avengers at then end of last issue, and obviously the 1st to make good on the promise. He wants revenge for #12. He doesn't bother coming back to complain that he wasn't considered worthy for the cover. He was beaten out by the Minotaur.
