The Pentagon contacts the Avengers and calls them to Stark's Mansion for a meeting. On a secured channel, they learn of an alien invader landing in Virginia and agree to investigate.

Once they arrive they are met by Kang, a time traveler from the year 3000. He provides them with an abridged version of his life story. In the 30th century, he perfected time travel and was able to journey back into ancient Egypt where he ruled for a time as Pharaoh Rama Tut (Fantastic Four #19). Repairing his time vehicle, he accidentally missed his mark and went forward to the year 4000, a time in which humanity had devolved into barbaric hordes. Kang easily conquered this era as it had a limited understanding of technology. He quickly grew bored and traveled back to this era for a new challenge.

The Avengers refuse to accede to Kang's demands and attack him in full. Kang activates a device that captures Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and Giant-Man. It brings them into his ship and places them in a special cell where they are rendered immobile.

The Wasp and Rick Jones are the only members that remain free. Wasp returns to the Avengers' mansion to find any weapons that may defeat Kang. Rick contacts his teen brigade and pretends to side with Kang to gain access to his ship in order to free the other Avengers.

The Wasp returns at the proper moment to give Giant Man a weapon he and Tony Stark designed that generates a highly corrosive liquid that destroys Kang's weapons. When Kang uses his radioactive weapon, Thor uses Mjolnir to redirect the radiation back to Kang, forcing him to retreat into the timestream.

First appearance of Kang

The Avengers #8 Review by (October 9, 2011)
This issue is the first to mention that the Avengers meetings have a rotating chairman. Last time it was Giant-Man, this time it's Captain America. It appears here that Cap has been training the whole Teen Brigade, not just Rick Jones. On his way back to the future from Ancient Egypt in Fantastic Four #19, Rama Tut met Dr Doom in the present in FF Annual #2. In Avengers Annual #2 it will be revealed that before becoming Kang in 4000 he then took a side trip to an alternate universe as Scarlet Centurion. Kang will be one of the Avengers most persistent foes. Immortus, to be introduced in #10, will also be a recurring character who will turn out to be Kang from later in his life.
