Synopsis

The Defenders #120 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Daimon Hellstrom, Son of Satan, drags himself through the snow until he reaches the door of a monastery in Massachusetts. He is admitted by the Abbot, Father Raymond Gosset, his seminary professor. Daimon confesses that now he has broken with his father, he now has no identity at all and it’s driving him mad. He transforms into his Son of Satan form, wondering if this is his only destiny, and pleads with Father Raymond to help him believe….

The next day at the monastery, Brother Joshua introduces himself to Daimon, explaining he came there with no memory of his past life and he will be taking his formal vows to join the monks in four days. Joshua natters on about seeking power in his heart and self-knowledge, while scaring a deer away. Daimon excuses himself to find the Abbot….

Late night at Defenders HQ, Patsy “Hellcat” Walker wakes up screaming, alarming her non-teammates who come running. She reveals that she sensed that Daimon is in trouble….

At the monastery, Father Raymond talks with Daimon as he is working on repairing the tractor. He warns Daimon that the monastery is no place to hide and shares uneasy feelings about Brother Joshua but he shrugs it off….

At the YMCA, Beast and Hellcat are putting on an acrobatic exhibition to entertain the young men while Patsy reveals she is still dreaming that Daimon is in trouble. Nearby, Valkyrie deadlifts a 350-pound weight with one hand, shocking a scoffing dude who asks if she is one of those Russian lady athletes who is really a man in disguise. Her answer is to wrap the barbell around him. They decide to return to headquarters….

As he is in prayer, Daimon suddenly has severe chest pains and he sees a light drawing him downstairs at the monstery. He follows the light to the basement where he discovers the light is emanating from Brother Joshua’s head. It stops and Joshua turns blasting Daimon with light, which panics Joshua who doesn’t understand what is happening to him; Daimon offers to help him find out….

At the Sanctum Sanctorum, Hellcat seeks the aid of Over-Mind to find Daimon. He focuses the minds of the six psychics who make up his consciousness; the feedback from Patsy’s mind knocks him over but it reveals Daimon is in Massachusetts. They leave word with Wong where they are going, in case Dr. Strange returns, and depart….

The next day, Brother Joshua is taking his formal vows to become a monk when suddenly he recovers his memory and stands revealed as the Miracle Man. With a wave of his hand, he makes the monks fly around the room aimlessly while Daimon suffers severe chest pains. Miracle Man assumes his true form (mostly naked save for a green speedo, thigh high boots, and a huge green cape). The Abbot pleads with him to stop but he calls himself a god and turns the Abbot to stone. Daimon assumes his Son of Satan form and challenges MM who turns the monks to dust to clear the way for battle. Daimon unleashes hellfire on MM who feasts on it, then grabs his trident and absorbs his Darksoul since that’s what has been calling to him the entire time….

Meanwhile, the Defenders have borrowed a Quinjet from the Avengers and are rushing to the rescue….

The Defenders #120 Review by (December 17, 2024)

Review: More Son of Satan but this time, his identity crisis only occupies a few pages before it recedes into the background and the story focuses on the FF’s early foe, the Mircale Man. This guy steals SoS’ powers and goes all megalomaniac. Meanwhile, it’s the other Defenders to the rescue! Fairly tolerable for a Son of Satan story as he’s clearly the good guy, using his devil powers against the bad guy. Too bad that doesn’t work out. Maybe next time.

Comments: Part one of two parts. Daimon broke with his father in issue #105. Joshua Ayers is the same Miracle Man who appeared in FANTASTIC FOUR #3; he was last seen in MARVEL TWO-IN-ONE #8, battling Thing and Ghost Rider. Dr. Strange is said to be off on the adventure in DOCTOR STRANGE (1974) #59. Jack Abel, Kim DeMulder, and Andy Mushynsky shared inking duties.
