Synopsis

The Invaders #26 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Bucky Barnes has rushed the dying Toro in Namor's flagship to California in search of surgeon Dr Sam Sabuki to save his pal's life, only to find Dr Sabuki has been sent to relocation center with all the other Japanese-Americans. Bucky flies Toro to the nearest hospital where Toro is examined by a surgeon who pronounces the case hopeless—even for Dr Sabuki. A helpful nurse quietly tells Bucky that Sabuki is in the center at Sandy Flat. Bucky goes there and, after establishing his identity, is taken to see the commander, Captain Sims; Bucky makes his request and Sims refuses, considering all Japanese to be traitors and he orders Bucky arrested. The boy hero fights his way through the camp until he locates Dr Sabuki and his daughter Gwenny Lou....

Meanwhile, the rest of the Invaders (Captain America, Sub-Mariner, Human Torch, Spitfire, Union Jack) arrive at Lord Falsworth's estate where they find that Roger Aubrey, the former Dyna-Mite, has been restored to his normal size and will now be fighting behind enemy lines as the new Mighty Destroyer! Lord Falsworth arranges for them to have the use of a bomber to fly to America to see about Bucky and Toro....

Bucky fills Dr Sabuki in on the urgent matter but they are interrupted by a giant vehicle drilling its way up through the floor into Sabuki's house. A trio of costumed goons seize Sabuki and knock down Gwenny when she intervenes but Bucky quickly clobbers them and tries to make a run with the doctor but they are again interrupted, this time by the villainous Agent Axis, holding a gun to Gwenny's head. A fight follows and Bucky is knocked out; Sabuki agrees to go with the baddies so long as they don't hurt his daughter or Bucky. The camp guards arrive to see the drilling device vanish into the ground with its three captives....

Review / Commentaries

The Invaders #26 Review by (December 3, 2018)

Review: And another comic book adventure plays out against a historical incident from WW2, this time the internment of Japanese Americans. The unwarranted suspicion of their loyalty and just plain bigotry was a dark moment in American history, as recognized a few decades later. This comic captures it well, if a bit simplified to fit into a comic book, which is okay since this is a comic book. Your homework is to read Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki Houston and Donald Houston. More on the Invaders story next issue.

Comments: Part one of three parts. First appearance of Roger Aubrey as the second Mighty Destroyer, who announces plans to fight the enemy in Europe, which, mind you, was the Invaders' original mission. First appearance of Gwenny Lou Sabuki who becomes Golden Girl next issue. Agent Axis was introduced in INVADERS ANNUAL #1, the previous year. Namor's flagship has GPS. There's a goofy reference to a certain Man of Bronze when a skeptical soldiers says “And I'm Doc Savage's mother-in-law!”
