The Galactus Seed 6: The Proposition

Synopsis

The Mighty Thor #6 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

As Loki plunges into the abyss of the World Tree Yggdrasil, Pastor Mike in Broxton confronts Galactus to plead for mercy—and the World-Devourer refuses. As Volstagg and his Brigade prepare to war with Galactus despite Pastor Mike’s exhortation to a non-violent conclusion, the Silver Surfer suddenly senses that the Seed is no longer in the realm—and Mjonir flies out of Thor’s hand to be snatched up by the Destroyer. Galactus withdraws into space and Thor scolds the newly-awakened Odin only to be told that the All-Father explains himself to no one.

In Asgard, Thor and Sif force Loki to reveal that he returned the Galactus Seed to the World Tree, in order to save Thor’s life—but no one ever appreciates anything he does….

Later, the Surfer meets with a pensive Pastor Mike with a proposition. The next day they meet with Odin and Galactus and the Surfer explains his plan: the Silver Surfer will remain on Earth to ensure that the Seed is never recovered; after the Aesir are dead and gone, the Surfer will then claim the Seed for Galactus. In the meantime, Pastor Mike will become the new Herald, his gentleness and compassion making him suitable for the role of guiding Galactus to devour uninhabited worlds. This is acceptable to all parties and the war ends. Later Thor approaches Loki and assures him the wound he received (in issue #1) is not life-threatening and he apologizes for his anger at his well-meaning but misguided brother.

In space, Galactus’ new herald, the Praetor, leads his master to understand the mysteries of mortals….

Review / Commentaries

The Mighty Thor #6 Review by (August 8, 2012)
Review: So, it’s over and what do we have? Loki is the hero (though unappreciated); a bad-tempered vulgar Thor doesn’t do anything. Pastor Mike (or Matt Fraction) seems to have no firsthand experience with Christianity, and so he is overawed by a bunch of comic book characters and insulted by Volstagg. The Silver Surfer is an angry dude who uses American idioms like “I’m working on it” yet seems to have forgotten everything he learned about humans in the first several decades of his comics career (seriously, studying humans was his whole job for most of his existence). Another magical McGuffin appears and disappears conveniently. And Galactus gets a new herald, one who I would actually like to see again—even if he is a serious version of the Golden Oldie (that was Spidey’s Aunt May in the comical MARVEL TEAM-UP #137).
