Revenge of the Enchanters

Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #16 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Heimdall senses an intruder in Asgard and summons the warriors. Balder and Sif, with others, break into Odin’s chambers. But Odin is undisturbed, claiming that perhaps his dream of an intruder was enough to trigger Heimdall’s senses….

Jane Foster has helped Jake Olson escape from the hospital where he was in police custody; she advises him to find a lawyer but instead he has a hammer to find. As he runs, Thor within Jake ponders whether Jake really is guilty of the crimes he is accused of and decides to abandon the identity once he regains his hammer. He reaches the downtown area where he beholds Enrakt of the Enchanters battling Hogun, Fandral, and Volstagg, stunning them with a green haze with a wave of his hand. He then transforms various human bystanders into monsters and calls on them to feast on the gods, who find themselves fighting for their lives. This allows Jake to sneak past him and touch Mjolnir which transforms him into Thor who then challenges Enrakt. But the Enchanter seizes Thor and makes the street they stand on rise into a platform high above the ground. Enrakt draws power from Mjolnir and hurls it back at Thor, trapping him in the green haze. The Warriors Three are having trouble vanquishing the monsters and the police arrive at the scene to have the creatures attack them. Thor hits Enrakt with a blast of anti-force which does nothing. The villain explains how he freed his brothers from the Lost Limbo of Infinity Unending where Odin had imprisoned them by stumbling upon a fire pit belonging to the sorceress Ceranda when Thor was living with her. It was then that the weakened Enrakt possessed Mjolnir. Enrakt shows Thor what is happening in Asgard: Odin is fighting Magnir and Brona and having trouble. And Enrakt must join them so he kicks Thor off the platform and departs….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1998 series) #16 Review by (August 5, 2025)

Review: Wait, what just happened? The last issue ended with Lt. O’Neil shooting Jake Olson and now in this issue Jake seems to have gotten away unharmed with O’Neil not knowing where Jake is. They promised a shocking development next issue and they delivered: it’s just that I never expected amnesia on the part of the writer.

As for the rest of the issue, having gotten over my disappointment, it’s okay. JRJR’s art gives Enrakt a very solid presence, believable as one who can defeat Thor. And that’s what happens: Thor gets his tail whupped. Oh and Loki makes a last page surprise appearance. Not a great issue, just a chapter in a serial, which just moves us to the next installment.

Comments: Part three of seven parts. Thor met Ceranda in THOR ANNUAL 1999. There’s a reference to THE JERRY SPRINGER SHOW (1991-2018), a sensational talk show notorious for manufacturing conflict, occasionally leading to violence. The lettering is split between Richard StarkingsComicraft, and Wes Abbott
