Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #35 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

In the far future, Zarrko the Tomorrow Man is trying to adjust his equipment so he can watch the fight between Thor and Gladiator but no matter how much trouble he puts on his techs, nothing works right…

…as Gladiator kicks Mjolnir so that it lands at the airport. He then hits Thor so that he crashes down into a truck. Amanda Fairmont looks inside and discovers Jake Olson on fire; she uses the stacked linen to try to put out the fire while calling 911. Gladiator arrives looking for Thor but he is yanked out from behind by Thor Girl who recovers from his return blow and delivers a beating to him. Meanwhile, Christine Collins arrives with the ambulance, recognizes Jake and sends Mandy away. She curls Jake’s hand into a fist and strikes it on the ground but he is not transformed into Thor; she concentrates to locate Mjolnir….

The trolls led by Ulik use the mask of invisibility to invade Asgard, surprising Heimdall. Sif hears his clarion call and Balder confirms it. Sif commands Balder to find Thor while she leads the charge; Balder reasonably suggests that as she is the one who can teleport, perhaps it should be the other way around. So she sets off for Midgard….

The defeated Gladiator seeks only a means of escape so he drops a water tank on Thor Girl and uses his cold breath to freeze her in place. He then looks for Jake but he is gone and he guesses it is the hammer Thor will try to retrieve, following them to the airport. Christine has arrived there with Jake, locating Mjolnir on a runway. She curls Jake’s hand around it and taps it on the ground just as Gladiator comes crashing down, driving Thor and Gladiator into the ground where the God of Thunder tries to learn why his erstwhile ally is now his enemy. The combatants leave the hole to find themselves in the path of an airliner coming in for a landing….

At the hospital, Jake’s mom comes in looking for him, surprising Jane Foster and Hannah Fairmont. But they are interrupted by an emergency call from Keith Kincaid’s room. Then Mandy rushes in, claiming that Jake has been badly burned….

In Hel, Hela shushes the whiny Volla, and summons one of her minions, entrusts him with a mission and sends him out….

Jane dashes upstairs to find her husband has suddenly awakened from his coma but something seems…off….

In Asgard, the heroes battle the trolls and Ulik reaches Odin in his Odinsleep in order to kill him but Balder stands in his way. A battle commences….

Sif arrives on Earth to find the frozen Tarene. She breaks the ice and immediately Thor Girl is off looking for Gladiator. They head for the airport where Thor and Gladiator have accidentally flipped the jet on its roof. They must seize it, flip it back, and place it safely on the ground…and then stop its momentum so it doesn’t crash into the terminal. An angry Thor unleashes a blast on the reckless Gladiator who withstands it, seeing it as confirmation of Thor’s dangerous qualities. Thor pounds him then Thor girl arrives to pound him some more. Sif arrives to tell Thor he is needed back in Asgard…

…where Ulik has defeated Balder to approach the All-Father, who awakens (off-stage) clobbers the troll and appears on Earth, announcing his return to Thor and Sif. Gladiator tells Odin he knows what is coming and begs him to kill Thor. Odin is surprised to find Gladiator knows of “the reigning” and teleports him back to his own time. Odin scolds Tarene for dressing in a garb far beneath her dignity as the Designate. He then denounces Thor for neglecting the needs of Asgard to adventure on Earth so he changes Thor into his mortal form, Jake Olson with all of his burn injuries, and departs….

Back in the future, Gladiator informs Zarrko that Thor is too strong for him. Zarrko then indicates the result of this: the surrounding society, a wasteland inhabited by the hungry and the dying….

Christine Collins hurries back to her apartment as her disguise spell is about to end. She steps through her magic Mirror of Mysolljh to reveal the Enchantress….

Thor (1998 series) #35 Review by (November 18, 2025)

Review: So we finally discover Christine is the Enchantress, which makes her sexual harassment of Jake Olson understandable, kind of. Oh yeah, all the stuff building up to it…there’s a dark future in store unless Thor is defeated now and we’ll get to it, seeing as it takes over this comic starting at about issue #41. So for now, we have the thrilling battle between Thor and the almost equally matched Gladiator—who turns out to be no match for Thor Girl. The exciting centerpiece of the issue was the heroes preventing that plane crash. All the Asgard scenes, which would normally dominate the issue, are here now just some background details. But they lead to Thor being depowered once again and we’ll have to suffer through that trope until things go crazy once more.

Comments: Extra-large issue. Part three of three parts. The future with Zarrko and Gladiator is designated Earth-3515. Final appearance of Gladiator; Zarrko returns in #43. And this Keith Kincaid who is really Hela’s minion, is said to be Skurge the Executioner in #43 though he has a separate entry in Marvel Database. Colors by Gregory Wright and Joe Rosas. Letters by Wes Abbott and Richard Starkings.
