Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #34 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

At Avengers Mansion, Jarvis answers the door to Cal Kramer, Daily Bugle reporter, asking for Thor. But he can see that Thor isn’t there and leaves with a threat….

Meanwhile, Thor is dealing with Tarene, now calling herself Thor Girl who is demanding to be tested as a hero. But Thor warns that as the Designate, she should not be placing herself in danger, lest the universe suffer for it. She fires an explosive blast from her hammer which takes Thor by surprise as he deflects it. The blazing confrontation is spotted by Cal Kramer who recognizes Thor and heads over. Thor tries to persuade Tarene to find a safe place of enlightenment and leave the dangerous works to others. She hurls her hammer, slamming Thor through a brick wall and into a handy vacant building. She desires the adventures of Midgard, which he knows well. So he must arrange a secret identity and dwelling place for her. It can’t be with Jake Olson as it would be too difficult to explain to his mother. So they head out while Kramer watches from a secret perch above….

In the land of the Trolls, Ulik is brooding as the other trolls complain of their hunger and deprivation. Ulik blames Odin and the Asgardians, claiming that if Odin were awake, the All-Father would feed them but Sif ignores their plight. So they plan to do something about it….

Jake brings a disguised Tarene to the hospital, introducing her as his cousin to Hannah Fairmont and her sulky daughter Amanda. He asks if Tarene can stay with them for a while. But Amanda is still angry with Jake for breaking off his engagement to her mother (despite his claims in ANNUAL 2000 that she was engaged to his evil twin Loren, which seems to have been forgotten by everyone). While Jake tries to explain, Christine Collins walks in and gives Jake a very sexy kiss, surprising everyone, including Jake, and enraging Mandy who runs out...

…which events are being watched from Asgard by Sif who finds Christine strangely familiar. Then Balder brings news that the trolls are gathering in armies and he fears the worst…..

Jake chases Mandy down the street calling for her to stop but she ignores him. She runs into Cal Kramer who asks if Jake is bothering her. He seizes her and when Jake arrives Kramer fires heat vision at him, which he manages to dodge. Kramer releases Mandy and transforms into his identity as Gladiator. Jake transforms into Thor and faces him. They bash each other while Gladiator explains that only Thor’s death will prevent a dire future from coming to pass for his world. Gladiator blows a strong breath, sending Mandy through the air; Thor catches her and calls up a stronger wind. They hurl half a building back and forth at one another. Gladiator kicks Mjolnir through the air and it lands at the airport. He then hits Thor, sending him through the air so that he crashes through the roof of a truck and the fleeing Mandy sees Jake Olson dying in flames….

Thor (1998 series) #34 Review by (November 11, 2025)

Review: The Supergirl/Superman vibe continues: Thor has to arrange a secret identity and home for his girl cousin; at least he doesn’t dump her in an orphanage and order her not to use her powers. But Gladiator seems familiar with his suspiciously recognizable guise as a bespectacled reporter which he doffs just before using his “heat vision” on Thor. And the action really ramps up with Thor facing his match in strength and other abilities. Meanwhile, the Jake Olson soap opera continues for no clear reason, with Mandy mad at him and Christine plotting something (revealed at the end of next issue that she’s the Enchantress in disguise). Oh yea, the trolls are on the march, to add some Asgard-centric plot complications next time.

Comments: Part two of three parts. First appearance of Amanda Fairmont since issue #9.
