Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #56 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

A young mutant named Davis records his manifesto, accusing Thor of trying to usurp the place of Jesus Christ on Earth so he decides it is up to him to do something about it….

In Cincinnati, Ohio, Thor enchants a magic jewel, creating a more stable and cleaner source of energy for the city, replacing its several nuclear plants. Thor then gives a fragment of the jewel to Thialfi to deliver to Tony Stark so that he might replicate it for other cities. Crusher Creel cheers as Thor flies off while the staff of the nuclear plant now complain that they no longer have jobs….

In Asgard, Thor defends his choosing to allow humans to employ Asgardian magic; while the gods may give guidance, humans must make the decisions of how to use these things. Meanwhile, Davis the young mutant sneaks onto the site of the new magic jewel and presses his hands against the structure, causing it to age and crumble in minutes, collapsing to the ground. But Crusher Creel, the Absorbing Man, has spotted the young man, and he turns to steel to knock him out and take him prisoner. Creel carries Davis up to Asgard and presents him to Thor. Davis is questioned as to why he did it and his response is that Thor is a fraud, trying to supplant the One True God, by forcing his way in where he wasn’t invited…

…and Davis records the outcome: Thor offered to let him go free if he promised not to do anything like it again. Davis agreed but only so he could be released to do it all again….

Davis then disguises himself as a delivery man to get past Thor’s guards at the Cleveland Electric Plant. His ruse is uncovered so he uses his mutant power to seize the guard and age him to death. Davis leans against the magic jewel’s structure and causes it to explode. Thor decides to act against the boy who has contacted the media and gained supporters. As he has broken the laws of Asgard and those of his own God by killing the guard, Thor calls in Heimdall to hunt down the boy…

…and Thor confronts Davis in a forest, intending to turn him over to the law. The boy seizes Thor and uses his power to decay both of them but Thor pushes him away and the boy ages and dies, commending his spirit to God. Thor is confused, having done nothing to harm Davis. Heimdall shows him Davis’ recorded farewell, warning the world that Thor is the Devil in disguise, and notes that it has been uploaded to the internet. Thor realizes that Davis turned his own power on himself and he notes that Davis many have started a chain of events that will affect all that is to come….

Thor (1998 series) #56 Review by (June 3, 2026)

Review: Ho hum, another crackpot Christian as the villain in a fantasy story. It’s annoying but it does lay the groundwork for “The Reigning” as the cracks in Thor’s system grow wider. Davis is an immature self-absorbed jerk but he gets the job done.

Comments: Sole appearance of Davis. His final words match the last words of Jesus on the cross.
