On a snowy New York day, paramedic Jake Olson arrives at the
scene of an accident where a truckload of girders tipped over on a van. The van
driver was rescued but her young son is trapped. After sizing up the situation,
Jake decides the only viable option is to amputate young Jarrod’s leg to
extricate him from the wreckage. Jake asks Jarrod’s mother for permission but
she refuses, insisting that if she prays to Thor he will come and rescue her
boy. Jake ridicules her idea and, despite not being a surgeon, plans to
amputate (since he secretly possesses the skills of Thor’s previous alter ego,
Don Blake)….
Meanwhile, Thor is led by a mystery voice out into the
country where he follows it through a waterfall, losing his clothes and armor,
and enters space to come face-to-face with a vision of Odin, telling him the
time has come to ascend to a level he has not yet dreamed of….
Jake calls Dr. Jane Foster, who knows of his secret
connection to Thor, and she tells him that if he can gains the mother’s consent
Jane will back him up at the hospital. So Jake again explains to the mother
that Thor is not coming and the amputation is the only way to save Jarrod’s
life. The mother still refuses so Jake has his ENT partner hold her back while
he saws off the boy’s leg….
Thor bows before Odin and the place where they stand becomes
a pillar rising thousands of feet into the sky as Odin scolds Thor for allowing
his past to define his ways rather than looking toward the future. Thor infers
that Odin is speaking of the Odinforce but he wonders how he can inherit it if
Odin is still alive. Odin appeals to him to try to concentrate on feeling what
he desires and the power will supply the rest….
As the boy is put into the ambulance, suddenly Lady Sif
arrives to see what is going on. Jarrod’s mother appeals to her to strike down
Jake Olson, who defends his decision. Sif takes the boy and his mother to
Asgard and Neffethesk the healer. As Sif departs, a
young woman steps out of the crowd and hands Jake a floppy disc….
Thor finds himself on a boat at sea with Odin. Thor appeals
to Odin to return to Asgard, Odin reminds Thor that the throne is his and he
need only open is eyes to it. Thor finally puts all the clues together to
realize his companion is not Odin—and then he is blasted with energy. He knows
that this is not Odin but the Odinforce personified. So he returns through the
waterfall, resumes his clothing and armor and returns to Asgard with a vision
of the glory that it can be….
Jake looks at the disc he was given and it contains the
manifesto of Davis, explaining why Thor is the enemy of mankind….
