Synopsis

Thor (1998 series) #9 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Thor joins Detective Brady O’Neil and the police confronting a huge robotic creature called Replicus which has just robbed a bank. Thor recognizes it from a long time ago and fights the monster, smashing it open; the police also have a trace on the source of the robot’s signal. Demitrius Collins was present in case emergency services were needed; he mentions his partner Jake Olson is at the Giants game with his fiancée. Thor is reminded and dashes off, surprising everyone who didn’t know the God of Thunder was a football fan. Thor crashes into the hideout of the robot’s controller, teen hacker Seth Sykes, and leaves him with a warning. Thor then zips to the stadium parking lot, changes into Jake, and arrives at his seat to meet Hannah Fairmont and her daughter Amanda who didn’t think Jake would show up….

In Asgard, the Dark Gods reign. Perrikus taunts the captive Odin but when Tokkots returns to inform him that Thor is alive and on Earth, he grabs his weapon and orders Adva to open the Continuum Gateway for him….

After dinner, Jake parts with Hannah and Mandy, pleading work as an excuse. Once they have gone off in a taxi, Jake dashes into an alley and transforms back into Thor and spins his hammer to take him to the land of the Trolls. There he meets the imprisoned Orikal and asks him what happened to Asgard. Orikal responds that he is prevented from revealing the truth as his master (Troll King Geirrodur) is absent. But the mysterious Marnot appears, having decided that the time was right to tell Thor what he wants to know. So. Many centuries ago, Odin had sent out scouts to explore the universe. One of them, Lonkarr, returned to tell Odin of the Dark Gods who inhabited a city called Narcisson. While there, he was attacked by a woman warrior called Tserron; after a lengthy battle, Lonkarr killed her but her husband Perrikus declared war on Lonkarr’s people, allowing him to escape so the Dark Gods could find where he came from. A brutal war ensued in which it appeared the Asgardians would be defeated but the boy Thor tossed a broken spear to the wounded Odin who rallied and led his army to defeat the Dark Gods. They were banished to a far corner of the universe while Perrikus was locked up in a hidden cell in Asgard, one which Thor unwittingly broke open back in issue #1. Odin then erased all memory of the Dark Gods from everyone but himself. Now Thor learns the Dark Gods are in Asgard and his father and brethren are prisoners so he determines to take the war to them….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1998 series) #9 Review by (May 13, 2025)

Review: And as the title indicates, we get some answers! We find out who the Dark Gods are. We also see Jake Olson make it to an appointment for the first time. And we meet the imposing Orikal, who does absolutely nothing in the story but we’re going to be running into him a bit later so here’s hoping he’s more cooperative next time. Oh and we’re going to see a three-part epic war of the gods! The Ordway/Buscema art is quite pleasing while the Thor soap opera bits are kept to a minimum. Cheers all around!

Comments: This Replicus is a duplicate of the one who appeared in THOR #141 way back when; sole appearance of its owner, Seth Sykes. Detective Brady O’Neil was introduced in issue #1; this is his second appearance and he will show up frequently until issue #20. Orikal (i.e. Oracle) first appeared in THOR #138-139; he will show up a lot more in this series. Only appearance of Lonkarr and Tserron. There is a Shores Building, possibly named for Syd Shores, Golden Age Captain America artist. John Buscema and Jerry Ordway collaborated on the pencils; there is no credited inker. The lettering is split between Richard Starkings, Comicraft, and Wes Abbott
