Thor #4 Review by (August 15, 2018)

Review: Quite enjoyable but I still have trouble following Del Mundo's art. Is it just me? Oh yeah and the break-up scene between Thanos and Hela is surprisingly poignant; one can actually feel sorry for the Goddess of Death. And even Thori, the good little murder-dog, has a sweet moment dreaming of a peaceful retirement.

Comments: Note: The events of this issue take place before INFINITY WARS PRIME #1. Art credited to Mike Del Mundo “with color assists by Marco D'Alfonso.” Issue includes a letters page.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #4 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Hela tries to call of her wedding to Balder now that her boyfriend Thanos has arrived but Karnilla insists it is still on. They are interrupted by the attacks of the Queen of Cinders, leading the invasion of Hel. Thanos wants to talk to Hela while Thori puts off murdering Loki for killing Thor until after the bad guys are vanquished. Loki hurls Thor's hammer with a glowing green chain attached....

Thor, meanwhile, under Loki's spell that makes him seem dead, is trying to enter Valhalla to recruit the dead warriors there. Valkyrie refuses him entrance, suspicious of him, but Thor persuades her to assemble the Einherjar and join him in the battle as he catches the hammer Loki threw to him and they now have a way back....

As Sindr's forces take the field, Balder is attacked by Gar-Toom, Lord of Murderers, and Thori pauses in his fighting, dreaming of a peaceful place without murder, before tearing into the enemy once more....

Meanwhile, Thanos is breaking up with Hela because the Infinity Stones have come back into his life. So he destroys a demon with one finger to fulfill his promise to help Hela regain her kingdom and walks off....

Thor arrives with the forces of Valhalla behind him. Valkyrie slices Gar-Toom into little chunks to save Balder. Sindr threatens Hela but Thor scoops up her fallen antlered headdress and hits Sindr across the face with it. Thor dons the hat and a second hammer appears in his hand, this one composed of frozen blood, and he takes on the Queen of Cinders as his side begins to overwhelm the foe. (Skurge the Executioner points out to Thori that his master has returned and the dog is overjoyed.) Sindr vows vengeance on Thor's family but his family (Loki, Balder, Tyr, Fenris Wolf, and Hela) are assembled there so Sindr backs out and calls on Malekith to transport her away....

Hela still wants her realm back and, as Balder never finished his vows, the wedding is off. Karnilla quickly steps in and marries Hela with her wedding gift being Balder be returned to life. The brides ride off with Tyr their servant....

Malekith sneers at the defeated Sindr....

Balder returns to Thor's boat in Midgard with Valkyrie coming along. Loki, having completed his part of the bargain (sending Thor to Hel in issue #1) he takes his prize and departs. Thor has Balder and Valkyrie help him search the boat to discover what Loki has taken but they can't figure it out...though we get to see the discolored patch on the wall where a framed picture has been removed....
