Synopsis

Thunderbolts (2006 series) #158 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The Thunderbolts B-Team is fighting zombies in the world’s largest cemetery in Najaf, Iraq, and having a hard time of it. Boomerang is saved by Troll. Shocker is overwhelmed by zombies while Centurius is more interested in testing a theory about the monsters, leaving Shocker to vibrate his own way out. Songbird and Satana fly over, the latter collecting what she needs to conjure a flame barrier to block the magic animating the corpses….

Meanwhile at the Raft, Juggernaut is working out while a sinister voice speaks in his head, stoking his resentment of the Thunderbolts and how they don’t appreciate him. Then one of the Norse hammers hits the Raft; Juggernaut picks it up and he is possessed by Kuurth, Breaker of Stone. He swings the hammer and half of the prison is destroyed….

In Iraq, Satana’s flame barrier is not stopping the zombies, proving the animating force is not magical. Centurius discovers a spore in the air that attaches to the dead and is activated by an electrical impulse. He identifies the transmitter in an obelisk so Moonstone and Mach-V destroy it. Fixer receives a mixed signal from the Raft which Ghost amplifies, revealing chaos and panic. Fixer is unable to reach Warden John Walker so Songbird assembles the group and readies for action….

The newly powered Juggernaut flies off elsewhere and many inmates make their escape, including Man-Bull, Living Laser, Wrecking Crew (Piledriver, Wrecker, Thunderball), Aftershock, Ember, Tiger Shark, Icemaster. Others run into the newly arrived Thunderbolts and Stana subdues them with her catatonia spells. The others try to comprehend what happened to destroy half the prison. In the midst of the chaos, Songbird barks orders and they set to taking back the Raft….

Thunderbolts (2006 series) #158 Review by (May 6, 2025)

Review: FEAR ITSELF comes to the Thunderbolts and the first thing that happens? We wrap up the previous storyline. True, it’s full of zombies and zombies are cool, or at least easy to write for. And then another Norse hammer comes down and we’re off. This issue ends with the heroes arriving at the scene of the action viz the Raft, Marvel’s prison for bad guys with superpowers, most of whom are just cannon fodder. This introductory issue centers on the shock and awe of the event, leaving the big and little stories for next time. A rather well-done issue if a bit too heavy on heroes, most of whom have little to do. Next time…

Comments: Issue bannered FEAR ITSELF, as a tie-in to that event. Part one of five parts. Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #2 and 3. Issue includes a five-page preview of CAPTAIN AMERICA (2011) #1.
