Synopsis

Thunderbolts (2006 series) #160 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

At the Raft, the Thunderbolts leaders (Songbird, Fixer, Mach-V) contact Luke Cage in New York to report on Juggernaut and the hammer. Cage orders them to stop him (!) and signs off. They receive a call from Dennis, Man-Thing’s caretaker at the Habitat, telling them that Manny highly agitated. They learn Juggernaut is headed for Chicago. Songbird has Mach-V assemble the Alpha Team and head to the big city while Fixer stands by with the B-Team (and he resents being left behind)....

Songbird takes Satana and Moonstone down to the Habitat. Ghost has tapped into their conversation and reports to the rest of the B-Team (Boomerang, Troll, Shocker, Centurius, Calvin Zabo) and they (Boom, Shock and Cent—Zabo is asleep and Troll knows little English) debate whether this is their chance to escape when Centurius disables the nanites controlling them. Cent advises them to wait for a better opportunity when they are out in the field….

At the Habitat, Satana uses magical powers to calm down Man-Thing, then they (Songbird, Mach-V, Satana, Moonstone, Ghost) use Manny to teleport to a rural area near Chicago. Then Manny fades out and Satana explains that he is evolving into his next stage, which ticks off Songbird who liked keeping Manny as a transportation device. Juggernaut, possessed by Kuurth, Breaker of Stone, is on his way and they want to persuade Juggy to break free of his possessor. Songbird flies out to him and creates a sonic spiral to dizzy him then Moonstone approaches to appeal to him as a friend but he swings, blowing her away. Satana and Ghost work together to enter Juggy’s mind and see him doubly possessed, by Kuurth and Cytorrak—then Kuurth kicks them all out, shattering Mach-V’s armor. Juggy then smacks Moonstone into the distance. Songbird activates his nanites—and Juggy burns them out of his brain and then brings down his hammer with a boom that panics the people in Chicago….

Review / Commentaries

Thunderbolts (2006 series) #160 Review by (May 20, 2025)

Review: After dealing with a few details to be followed up on later, the Thunderbolts get to the meat of the issue: trying to stop Juggernaut (impossible ordinarily) who is now possessed by Kuurth, Breaker of Stone, making the impossible doubly so. Can they talk their old friend into fighting the supernatural power controlling his mind? No. They even check out his brain from the inside and things go bad. This gives us a clear idea of where this is going: a hopeless battle against a super-powered giant. Except that it isn’t going there in this book. Come back next time for the big switcheroo.

Comments: Issue bannered FEAR ITSELF, as a tie-in to that event. Part three of five parts. Story takes place between FEAR ITSELF #2 and 3. Dennis, Man-Thing’s caretaker, was introduced in issue #154; this is his second and final appearance. Mister Hyde appears only in his Calvin Zabo form.
