Synopsis

Tomb of Dracula #68 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Dracula stands atop the Empire State Building shouting defiance at Satan for turning him from a vampire into a normal human. His son Janus descends in his Golden Eagle form and Dracula demands his help in becoming a vampire again. Janus responds by teleporting Dracula to his castle in Transylvania—but he also brings along the vampire hunters: Rachel van Helsing, Frank Drake, Quincy Harker, and Harold H. Harold, plus Quincy’s dog Saint. They immediately attack their longtime enemy; he is able to hold them off until bitten on the hand by Saint. At this, Dracula flees and the others pursue, reaching a dead end but discovering a secret door. Dracula reaches a room full of coffins and he awakens one of his brides, Marissa, and demands she bite him. She refuses: Dracula no longer commands the undead and her new master Torgo has forbidden them to aid him. The vampire hunters arrive and there is another battle, with Dracula attempting to break Rachel's neck and Frank fighting him, then pursuing him through the halls and attempting to stab him with an arrow. It ends with Frank being stabbed and Dracula fleeing the castle….

Dracula arrives with a cemetery where his victims have been buried and summons them to his aid. They rise from their graves but as with the vampire brides, Dracula is no longer their master. They change into bat form and swarm their former lord. Quincy Harker arrives to confront the injured and weakened Dracula. The ex-vampire calls on God for help, renouncing Satan. Harker gloats and reveals he is really Satan in disguise (only since Dracula left the castle) and now he has humbled Dracula, crushing his pride. Satan leaves and Dracula discovers he is a vampire once more. The vampire hunters arrive, led by the real Quincy Harker, who recognizes that something is different about their longtime enemy: he is a broken man….

Tomb of Dracula #68 Review by (January 18, 2022)

Review: Bad day for Dracula: he is beaten, pursued, attacked, injured, disdained, and ultimately humiliated by Satan. Looks like Drac will be happy to have his comic series end and put him out of his misery. The most bizarre thing about the issue is Drac’s attempt to kill Rachel van Helsing on page ten; her body seems to move in unlikely ways and I’m surprised Gene Colan did it that way.

Comments: Part one of three parts. First appearance of Torgo (at least I assume that’s who Janus is talking to on page 7) who is seen only in a silent cameo.
