Synopsis

Uncanny X-Men, The (1981 series) #213 synopsis by reviewer Anthony Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Psylocke uses Cerebro to psychically scan the entire grounds. Wanting to feel useful, she asks Rogue if there’s any new information, who tells her to just sit tight. She knows the X-Men don’t fully trust her yet and wants to find a way to prove herself. She sends her psi-self down to the infirmary to check on the injured Nightcrawler, Colossus, and Kitty Pryde, with no change in any of their conditions. In fact, Kitty seems to be fading out more and more as time goes on; eventually she’ll cease to exist. She then scans over the empty rooms of the New Mutants, all missing since the deadly plasma surge in the Morlock Tunnels last issue, and worries about what could have happened to them. Speaking of, the rest of the X-Men check out the Morlock Tunnels after the heat surge. Wolverine can find no scents of anyone remaining and feels they need to assume the worst. Magneto refuses to accept that, the New Mutants having been his responsibility, and wonders if accepting Sebastian Shaw’s offer to join the Hellfire Club is the right decision. Storm objects to this and Psylocke makes her presence known, offering to telepathically scan the entire country if need be to locate either the New Mutants or the Marauders. Storm tells her they’ll consider it, feeling Psylocke is still too untested and now wouldn’t be the right time to throw her in headlong.

Back at the mansion, a frustrated Psylocke suddenly senses an intruder entering the school grounds! She tries to scan the intruder but receives massive feedback that ends up knocking her for a loop! Meanwhile, In Los Angeles, Dazzler still attempts to hide from the world, when Malice appears in her reflection once more. Malice’s hold over Dazzler tightens as she convinces Dazzler to free herself and stop hiding away. Back at the X-Mansion, Rogue is suddenly blindsided by Sabretooth, the very intruder that Psylocke sensed. Inside, Psylocke awakens and tries to alert the X-Men when Sabretooth appears behind her and smashes up Cerebro! She blasts him away, though not without getting slashed and decides the best thing to do is run, taunting Sabretooth to follow her. In the infirmary, Moira MacTaggert realizes that Psylocke is intentionally leading Sabretooth away from the injured in the infirmary! She tries to hold off Sabretooth, eventually making it up to the roof where she falls through the skylight and into Storm’s attic.

Sabretooth’s psychic defenses prove too strong, but Wolverine and Storm arrive in the nick of time to save Psylocke. Wolverine and Sabretooth begin a furious battle, as is their nature, that sends them up onto the roof and careening off into the pool. Magneto arrives as well and fashions chains out of some nearby metal to bind Sabretooth with. Psylocke objects, saying that Sabretooth’s mental defenses will be at their strongest when he’s captured and immobile, and the best way to gain information on the Marauders is to probe while he’s distracted fighting Wolverine. Psylocke reaches out while the two continue their brutal fight and eventually learns the information she needs. She alerts Wolverine that they’ve won and he tells Sabretooth he’s been played. Sabretooth escapes and later, the others contemplate the good job Psylocke did, and consider sending the injured to Muir Island where they’ll be safer. They congratulate Psylocke on her brave performance and welcome her as the newest X-Man!

Uncanny X-Men, The (1981 series) #213 Review by (November 12, 2025)

Review: The Mutant Massacre concludes with Psylocke’s trial by fire! Psylocke gets the chance to prove herself, as all new X-Men do eventually, by defending the mansion from Sabretooth. The issue is told from her point of view, giving us more insight into her character, which always makes for a nice change of pace. I always dig the unique POV issues. Psylocke holds off Sabretooth admirably, proving that she’s super cool even before she becomes a ninja! Plus, Wolverine and Sabretooth get to have the knockdown, drag out fight that they didn’t get to have last issue! It’s just as brutal and feral as you’d expect, and beautifully choreographed, perfectly establishing the standard for their fights. Guest artist Alan Davis does such a great job with it, I’ve always loved his art. Sabretooth comes off a bit stronger here than usual, though his strength has always been rather inconsistent. Sometimes he’s only a little stronger than Wolverine, other times he’s chucking cars or, like here, physically overpowering Rogue, which I’ve always found rather questionable. The X-Men win the day though and gain a new member! Welcome to the X-Men Psylocke, yadda yadda, you know the rest!

Comments: Final part of the Mutant Massacre storyline. Psylocke officially joins the X-Men.
