Story Name:

Lookin’ for Uncle Sam

Synopsis

United States of Captain America #3 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Captain America (Steve Rogers) and Captain America (Sam Wilson) are pursuing the super-fast Fake Cap after a series of destructive acts across the Midwest. They deduce he is Speed Demon and suspect he may be going after Joe Gomez in Kansas, a local handyman who has been called Captain America….

The two Caps meet with Joe Gomez and warn him he is in danger. Joe shows them a room in his house turned into a Cap museum because Cap is his inspiration, a man who always says what he means and cares for the people. After some discussion, they suspect the baddies may be targeting Monroe Elementary School, the site of the famous civil rights case Brown versus the Board of Education of Topeka, banning school segregation. Joe suits up in his Native American variation on the uniform….

They arrive at the school to be met by gunfire from the villainess, who Cap confirms is Sin, now calling herself Superior. Steve Cap is knocked out from behind. When he awakens, he finds Sam and Joe seriously wounded. As they rush Joe to the hospital, the man tells them he suspects the target may be Prescott, a Native American running in the primaries for Governor, who is speaking in town that day. When they arrive in town, Joe tells Steve that this is the second time he has saved his life (see the second story in the issue for the first). Sam and Steve go to the rally and Speed Demon is there; the villain hurls the shield at Prescott and Winter Soldier leaps out of the crowd and deflects it with his metal arm. As the baddie flees, Joe jumps out of the ambulance to try to catch him but he fails and says he is ready to go to the hospital….

Later, they learn that Prescott, fearing for his family’s safety, has dropped out of the primaries. Steve asks Bucky to join him and Sam in stopping the bad guys….

Synopsis: Joe Gomez, construction worker in Kansas City, heads to work with his coworker Nikki; on the way they talk about a recent spate of destruction by the Wrecking Crew and whether Captain America cares about people like them. At the construction site, Joe is working the crane when Bulldozer arrives to threaten the workers; Joe drops a girder on him so the villain climbs the crane to get him. Joe crawls out to the very end of the machine where he is able to kick Bulldozer off. When he slips off himself he is caught by Captain America. After this, Joe knows that Cap really does care about the people and he creates a costume, adapted from Cap’s, to protect his own people….

Review / Commentaries

United States of Captain America #3 Review by (August 25, 2021)

Review: And we have another local Captain America, protecting the marginalized group he is associated with. This time, it’s Native Americans, whose history in the US is quite grim. But Joe has no hard feelings, easily accepting Captain America as a symbol of what is right with the country and one that inspires him to help other. And as I desired in the first issue, we now have a Cap whose mission is not primarily beating people up but helping out as a local handyman. Note that Joe fares badly in violent confrontations in the two stories. Meanwhile, Sin is still trying to tarnish Cap’s image which apparently Secret Empire and the events in Ta-Nahesi Coates’ run with the character failed to do. The interesting bit about the second story: the writer and penciler are both Native American, allowing for a bit more diversity in Marvel’s bullpen.

Comments: Revelation: Sin speaks with a German accent. Issue includes a one-page profile of the Captain America of the Kickapoo Tribe (Joe Gomez); issue gives special thanks to Kickapoo consultants Keith Bluecloud and Mosiah Bluecloud.
