Synopsis

United States of Captain America #2 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The story starts with an odd recollection of Captain America (Steve Rogers) of a childhood visit to the Gettysburg battlefield where he was dissuaded for urinating in the grass because it was hallowed ground. Now in Central Pennsylvania, he meets up with Captain America Sam Wilson, both on motorcycles and Steve with the electronic shield once created for him by Tony Stark. They are looking for the fake Cap who stole Steve’s shield and are there to look into the case of Nichelle Wright, a young Black woman who was arrested for domestic terrorism while wearing a Captain America suit. First they investigate the new water pipeline Nichelle is accused of sabotaging. They realize that it was damaged using Cap’s shield—and the super-fast Cap impostor shows up to fight while confirming that his mission is to make the country hate the name of Captain America. The lady assassin in a red, white, and blue costume is also there and she shoots Sam. Steve conks her with a chink of wood and the imposter carries her off quickly….

At the jail, the Caps are denied permission to see Nichelle. A racist cop defends her arrest and Sam hurls the man through a glass door. They break Nichelle out to protect her from the assassin and she declines the aid, needing to get back to her job, protecting the people on the street. The lady assassin then drives up in a military vehicle and fires a mounted machine gun into the place. Nichelle Cap protects the racist cop and Steve Cap walks out, his shield protecting him from the deadly gunfire. But she doesn’t want to make Steve Cap a martyr, just tarnish his symbol using the local Caps when they can. She then fires a flame thrower at Cap and drives off. Nichelle declines to join the two Caps in their pursuit of the bad guys, instead getting back to her main job of protecting the neighborhood which the real Captain America has no time to do….

Epilogue: the baddies are revealed to be Speed Demon and Sinthea "Sin" Schmidt, now calling herself “Superior”….

Synopsis: Having been busted out of jail by Steve Cap and Sam Cap, new Captain America of Harrisburg Nichelle Wright is on the run. She dodges the police and returns to the neighborhood she protects and find a couple of white guys holding hostages in a restaurant to celebrate Nichelle’s arrest. She bursts in and fights the guys and receives a bullet in the shoulder. The police arrive and she runs for it, claiming she was protecting the people in the restaurant; a cop points out that it was the people in the restaurant that called the police. She is nabbed by a dude named Benjamin, who hides her in an abandoned church. She defends her practice of protesting legally by day and fighting crime as a vigilante by night. Nichelle’s sister Joan and her former gymnastics coach (who receives no name other than Coach) arrive to help. Joan shows her a series of videos of neighborhood people who offer their support for Nichelle. She gets a call from Aaron (Captain America of the Railways) warning her of trouble coming her way. So she goes out to meet it as a symbol for America.

United States of Captain America #2 Review by (July 28, 2021)

Review: So now we know who the baddies are (Red Skull connections) and their agenda (tarnishing the symbol of Captain America). And we have another local Cap: a young Black woman gymnast whose commitment to social change includes fighting crime by night. Another nice issue with musing on what Captain America symbolizes and how that doesn’t always match up with what Captain America does i.e. fighting Thanos and other global threats.

Comments: First story: Harrisburg is the capital of Pennsylvania. The electronic shield was given to Cap in 1998 series #9. Sinthea Schmidt a/k/a Sin, the Red Skull’s daughter, became Superior in Cap (2018 series) #25. Speed Demon was introduced in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #222. And I don’t understand the title’s relevance, Sin quoting Walt Whitman. Issue includes a one-page profile of the Captain America of Harrisburg (Nichelle Wright).
