Valkyrie: Jane Foster #9 Review by (September 22, 2020)

Review: Now that was a dirty trick, Tyr manipulating Val into providing him with the very object he needed. Poor Jane has had her good nature and reputation turned against her and it’s up to Mister Horse to comfort her. Meanwhile, Thor spends the entire issue as a zombie. And then Loki shows up. Once upon a time, that would not have been a big deal because Loki spent most of his time in the MU being a humorless villain. It’s only over the last decade or so that he was turned into a snarky anti-hero, making him one of the most entertaining of characters. He’s welcome these days—and a bit lost, as his solo series vanished out from under him a few months prior to this. So…Val is beaten, Thor is enslaved, Tyr has control of a cosmic monster, and Loki is here to comment. All looks good.

Comments: This issue takes place before the events of THOR (2020) #1 though Thor is shown in his Herald of Galactus guise on the cover. Jason Aaron and Torunn Gronbekk are co-writers.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Valkyrie: Jane Foster #9 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Prologue: Tyr, sentenced to serve in Valhalla by Thor, learned of the existence of Ode’s tomb and the Rokkva and eventually trekked to the site and forced his way in….

Now, the Rokkva has taken over Thor’s mind, turning him into a minion who sucks the life energy out of all he confronts. Valkyrie is aware that the specter of Thor’s death is so large that they are inside of it, so she fights to keep either one of them from dying. Then she realizes as Jane she must treat the cause not the symptoms. She turns the All-Weapon into a white wooden stake and jams it through Ode’s heart….

On the surface, the Avengers, Captain America, Doctor Strange, and Spider-Man, with Iron Man tuning in remotely, feel the world shake and see the demons drop and they know something has changed.…

Back in Ode’s tomb, Tyr arrives and takes the wooden stake from her, revealing that this weapon was what he was after all along. He revived Ode, knowing she would come to the tomb and that Undrjarn would become what she needed it to be. Tyr leaves with the enthralled Thor heading toward the Barren Mountains. Loki and his sidekick Drrf follow to see what is going on….

Mister Horse arrives to rescue Jane and she asks to be taken to Asgard to deliver a warning about Tyr….

Tyr uses the white wood to open a secret door in the mountains to find the massive monster that is the Rokka, and he has the white stake in his hand to control it….
