Story Name:

It Ends with a Kiss

Synopsis

Winter Soldier #19 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

Having saved the life of the Winter Soldier (Bucky Barnes), the Electric Ghost (Tesla Tarasova) surprises him with a kiss. She reveals that her father allowed himself to be slain by the Winter Soldier to prevent his discovery from falling into the hands of the Soviets who would use it as a weapon. She unveils the Tarasova Tesseract, a glowing cube which is the source of her power, and now she wants to bend time and space//she returns to her childhood and instead of murdering her friend Alphonse, as demanded by her trainers, she kills the brutal Master Murder Mouth instead//Tesla proceeds to visit the crisis points in her life, killing her enemies as Bucky pleads with her to abandon her thoughts of revenge…. Finally they reach the cabin where Bucky assassinated her father, she pleads with him to refuse his mission this time, preventing the creation of the Electric Ghost. He declines, insisting they can’t change the past, that he will have to live with this, the choice having made him stronger. She seizes the gun but they wrestle, Tesla inhabiting the body of Father Hammer, but Bucky asks if what she has really chosen is vengeance? They are suddenly cast back to the space station where, in frustration, Tesla shatters the Tesseract, sending the ship in a dive toward Earth. She can sacrifice herself to destroy the station, preventing it from killing civilians. Bucky instead persuades her to join him in his "jump" home, her intangibility shroud being the only thing that will ensure a safe landing. She does so and they plummet into the ocean—but she sinks to the bottom and Bucky is unable to save her….

Later Joe Robards meets with Bucky and explains how his beloved Gina Autry was the only person who accepted him for what he was; he ran from fear but instead of blaming himself, he realized she made her own choices—and Bucky had better do the same.

On the final page we see Bucky reunited with Natasha by the magic of the tesseract….

Review / Commentaries

Winter Soldier #19 Review by (June 12, 2013)
Review: I will be honest: the art is beautiful, but I do not know what is going on in this story. Tesla Tarasova, revealed last issue to be Dr. Manhattan, has used her father’s technology to construct the Tarasova Tesseract, which she intends to use apparently to reverse the bad events from her life. Or maybe it’s to kill all the bad guys. Or—and this is the weak link—trying to prevent her father’s death—or is she trying to make sure it happens? I have no idea. She seems to want Bucky to shoot her dad, yet he warns her against trying to change the past, so she picks up the gun herself—who is she planning to shoot, if not her father? Yet if she wanted her father to die that day, why return to this point in time at all? And why does she wreck the Tesseract? And why does Bucky talk her so easily out of sacrificing herself to save the world from the falling station? Where then does it crash? What is Joe Robards trying to tell Bucky at their last meeting? That he knows Bucky killed Gina and that he has to live with his past? Isn’t that what Bucky was trying to tell Tesla? Why does he need that lesson again? The final page, I’ll assume, is supposed to be ambiguous. Other reviewers seem to have had no trouble following the story so I’ll assume it is me. Nic Klein’s art is gorgeous, with another look at the childlike drawing and Tesla’s glow among other fascinating effects. The title as a whole was good—so expect some kind of relaunch next year when CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER is about to be released.

Comments: Final issue of the series.
