Synopsis

Winter Soldier #5 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

RJ is waiting at the restaurant for his father to show up and doesn’t know why he isn’t answering his phone…

…but it’s because Richie Boyle fatally injured himself in a fight with Winter Soldier. Bucky shows the body to Sharon Carter, intending to bury in the woods and let RJ just think his father ran out on him; Sharon insists he tell RJ the truth….

RJ breaks into his dad’s apartment and is met by Colt, his former Hydra handler. RJ is angry with Colt’s treatment of him and there is a fight. RJ manages to take away Colt’s nunchaku and strangle him with it but Colt produces photos of Bucky with Richie Boyle’s dead body….

Later, Bucky sees RJ leaving the house with all of his belongings and wants to talk—but RJ knows his father is dead and won’t listen to Bucky, kicking him down stairs and beating him but Bucky won’t defend himself and RJ, knowing he can’t kill Bukcy, never wants to see him again and runs out….

As Colt is sitting in his car, reporting to Hydra that they will soon have TJ back, he is cut to pieces by automatic weapons fire—in the hands of RJ. The boy tosses the rifle away and heads off into the night….

Days later, Bucky and Sharon meet at the cemetery where Richie Boyle has been buried. Bucky is miserable as he knows what it is like to hate oneself and he wanted to save RJ from all that. Sharon points out the difference between helping and saving and when his phone rings, Bucky answers it to speak to the next person needing help….

Review / Commentaries

Winter Soldier #5 Review by (October 14, 2019)

Review: The whole thing ends on a somber note as everything doesn’t work out after all and RJ takes off having lost all faith in his friend Bucky. Plus, he’s aware that he can’t go back to Hydra, which he ensures by shooting the bad guy. Bucky, meanwhile, is also devastated by how badly he handled the whole matter with RJ and he must decide whether to learn and move on or dwell in it and quit. He looks to be learning though we can’t really know. And the best part of the whole thing? It wasn’t a buildup to giving Bucky a kid sidekick. I would like to see more of Bucky’s redemption project in later appearances.
