Wolverine And The X-Men (2011 series) #12 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

The Phoenix has granted its power to 5 X-Men (Colossus, Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik and Sub-Mariner) instead of Hope Summers. The X-Men have started to create utopia on Earth. But the Avengers, including X-Men Beast and Wolverine, have given shelter to Hope and the X-Men have declared them outlaws and are hunting them down.

Rachel Grey remembers the future she was born in where she was forced to use her mental powers to hunt other mutants as a Hound. Now she's using them to hunt Avengers. Now she's come to Chaparanga Beach in Indonesia, the graveyard for alien spaceships, and The Last Astronaut bar. She compels all the patrons to leave except 1 who is her target Wolverine. She compliments his excellent psi-shielding which she supposes is courtesy of equipment designed by Henry McCoy and they banter about a previous time she nearly caught him in Madripoor. Then she gets straight to the point and demands to know where Hope Summers is. But Logan responds with violence.

Outside we see Sub-Mariner waiting with Angel, Iceman and Kid Gladiator. Namor's Phoenix-senses tell him that more Avengers are nearby. Rachel is ejected from the bar and he orders an attack. But they find Wolvie backed by Beast, Captain America, Giant-Man, Quicksilver, Spider-Woman, Thor and War Machine. Battle ensues.

But we get a flashback to weeks earlier, before the Avengers Vs X-Men event began, in the Jean Grey School where Rachel was teaching a psychic self-defence class to Anole, Kid Omega, Rockslide and Trance. She's mentally giving them a hard time because she knows what mental control can do to them. But Quentin Quire mentally responds with an image from her mind of herself as a Hound. And she responds by mentally attacking him until his nose bleeds. Headmaster Logan was watching and he dismisses the class before suggesting she went too far. But she says she's seen the future and she'll do anything to save them from it.

In the present Marvel Girl telekinetically uses Cap's shield against him while Kid Gladiator leaps to punch Giant-Man in the eye. Bobby Drake takes on his old classmate Hank McCoy from the original X-Men School. Beast has a special heat gun which blasts holes in Iceman's body while trying to talk him out of following Cyclops (another original classmate of course). But Bobby freezes water on Beast's fur to make a mini-Iceman. Fire meets lightning as Phoenix-Namor takes on Thor in midair and knocks his hammer Mjolnir out of his hand. It lands near Kid G who's rather enjoying Spider-Woman's bio-electric venom blasts, but he pauses to strain at picking it up. Also in midair War Machine is chasing Angel and shooting at him. Cap sends Quicksilver to get Hope away from here, but flying Kid G is as fast as him and eye-blasts him down. But then he faces Wolverine. Rachel is attacking Cap again but she can tell that the Avengers' psi-shielding is still effective. And then Thor with his hammer back blasts *her*.

Time for another flashback, this 1 only a few days earlier, after the 5 X-Men got the Phoenix power. Rachel is chatting in a desert to her father-from-a-different-timeline Cyclops (and I think he's leaving a trail of flowers behind him). She's uneasy about being a hunter again, even if it's (mostly) not against mutants. Scott Summers tries to reassure her that the utopian future will be worth it, and even the Avengers will come to see that. Rachel (who used to have the Phoenix power herself) asks if the Phoenix remembers her. Scott deflects the question by saying that the Phoenix loves her as it loves all.

In the present Kid Gladiator is beating up Wolverine who declines to unsheathe his claws, spoiling the youth's fun. Logan says he's killed many beings and it's not *meant* to be fun. He even knows how to take down alien Strontians like Gladiator and his son. And he proves it. Meanwhile Beast is besieged by mini-Icemen but he deals with *them* by eating them, much to Bobby Drake's disgust. Angel (who's currently not actually Warren Worthington) has been dodging War Machine's blasts while trying to peace-talk him but now loses patience and cause his armour to malfunction. And then realises he didn't know he could do that. Thor and Marvel Girl are still slugging it out. The Thunder God is successfully repelling her attack on his, but a more physical psi-attack works. Especially when followed by a pounding from Sub-Mariner. This leaves Rachel free to follow the psychic scent of Hope. She finds her being hustled away by Black Widow who falls to a psi-attack. Hope uses her mimicry power to face Rachel as an equal ...

... and the next thing we see is the aftermath where Rachel is remembering letting Hope go but telling Cyclops that she never found her. We learn that they captured Giant-Man and Quicksilver but the others got away. Scott Summers wants more details but just then Kid Gladiator runs past asking them to say he wasn't here. And his father Gladiator and bodyguard Warbird show up with Shi'ar soldiers swearing vengeance on the Phoenix.

Wolverine And The X-Men (2011 series) #12 Review by (March 7, 2026)
Tim Townsend, Jaime Mendoza, Al Vey and Victor Olazaba share the inking.

This issue occurs early in Avengers Vs X-Men #7 wherein the Phoenix-empowered X-Men hunt down the Avengers to try to find Hope Summers.

The non-flashback parts of this issue completely overlap with Avengers (2010) #29. We see the same battle from both sides. But the crucial difference is that Av#29 reveals that Charles Xavier is providing psychic shielding to the Avengers. But in the end he can't oppose his X-Men so he quits and removes any memory that he was there. In particular Rachel discovers that Hope was really him in psychic disguise, and that was 1 of the memories he modified.

Thor uses a semi-catchphrase against Rachel Summers "Thor would have words with thee". Semi- because he hasn't used it very often, and slightly different each time.
