Synopsis

Wolverine And The X-Men (2011 series) #11 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

The Phoenix Force is coming to Earth for its next host Hope Summers. The Avengers and many X-Men are clashing over control of the young mutant while other X-Men keep out of it in the Jean Grey School. Hope has caused herself to appear in 5 locations to Cerebra, and the combatants have split into teams to fight over her. But really Wolverine is going to take her to the Moon. Meanwhile Gladiator, ruler of the Shi'Ar, has sent the Death Commandos to kill her, and he himself is coming to Earth for his son Kid Gladiator at the school.

But Kubark now wakes up in a spaceship with his guardian Warbird. It turns out she decided to keep him safe by drugging him and stealing the ship from the school to take him back the the Throneworld and a Shi'ar hard labour learning institution. He thinks of all the 'interesting' things that happen to him on Earth and decides to go back there, purely as he explains because it's beneath him to run from a fight. So he activates his emergency escape pod and leaves Ava'Dara Naganandini behind.

But we leave him too, to see the 5 battles. Gambit, Magik and Warpath are fighting Captain America and Giant-Man (and mutant Madison Jeffries off-screen) in the Savage Land. Sub-Mariner and Sunspot take on Luke Cage and Thing in Tabula Rasa (with supposedly Hepzibah and She-Hulk only appearing as legs, but they don't look like theirs). In Latveria we see Dazzler and Colossus vs Spider-Man and Spider-Woman (with Daredevil, Domino and Mockingbird behind the scenes). Wundagore Mountain hosts Angel, Iceman and Psylocke vs Dr Strange, Hawkeye and Red Hulk. And Wakanda has Dr Nemesis, Magma, Rachel Grey and Storm (and Danger BTS) fighting Black Panther, Black Widow, Iron Fist and Quicksilver.

Now we turn Wolverine and Hope Summers in an X-Men Blackbird plane. Logan is remembering being unable to kill 'Jean Grey' as the original Dark Phoenix even though she begged him to (X-Men #136). Now he's going along with Hope to meet the Phoenix Force because she's made the same request if *she* turns Dark. She's piloting the plane and he's continuing to try to talk her out of her plan. They're heading for an AIM base to get transport to the Moon, to keep the meeting with the PF away from Earth itself.

But suddenly their craft is blasted and crashes. It's the Death Commandos, and their leader Flaw, a Warskrull, asks Hope to surrender to them and they won't kill anyone else. Inside the ship Wolverine's healing ability has kicked in, and Hope has mimicked it and also his claws. So they leap out in attack mode.

On Wundagore Mountain Iceman is fighting Red Hulk. He's generated multiple ice duplicates for Rulk to smash and then a giant ice fist to smash him into the ground. For Magneto and Dr Strange it's unsurprisingly magnetism vs spells. And flying Angel keeps dodging Hawkeye's arrows until he gets close enough to punch him.
In Wakanda we concentrate on Iron Fist vs Rachel Grey's telekinesis with married couple Storm and T'Challa battling in the background and the others on the borders (plus Danger's foot).

Back with the main action Hope attacks Krait, a Shi'ar scientifically evolved into an even more birdlike form. The insectoid Offset attacks but both heroes impale it on their claws. Then the shape-shifting Warskrull attacks Hope and guts *her*. Meanwhile the swarm of insects called Colony surrounds Wolvie and starts eating him alive. But now Hope manifests her greatest Phoenix flare-up yet and blasts Flaw and Offset and the bugs on Wolverine. Logan sees her gleefully angry face and knows he should kill her (if he can). But he remembers Jean again and can't even try. Luckily Hope comes to her senses and powers-down. The Death Commandos appear dead so H&W start to *walk* to the AIM base.

In the Jean Grey School for mutants headmistress Kitty Pryde is trying to keep things 'normal' by teaching a class on the physiology of her pet space dragon Lockheed. But the students (including Anole, Match, Oya and Rockslide) are too busy watching the various fights on their tablets. She confiscates the tablets but can't resist a sneaky peek.

Rachel Grey subdues Black Panther and Iron Fist.  Iceman's still facing Red Hulk with help from Angel when Kid Gladiator swoops in to punch the big guy. Captain America's fighting Gambit when he gets a message which tells him where Hope's really going. So he calls Tony Stark to ask him to recall all the Avengers. And we see that it's Wolverine who's alerted him.

Back in the JG School the class (now also including Glob Herman, Hellion and Quentin Quire) see Gladiator arrive in a spaceship and demand to know where his son is.

Wolverine And The X-Men (2011 series) #11 Review by (December 20, 2025)
Norman Lee and Walden Wong helped with the inking.

This is part of the Avengers Vs X-Men event, running alongside AvX#4.

We'll see Hope Summers and Wolverine invade the AIM base and take a rocket to the Blue Area of the Moon in AvX#4.

Wolverine's message to Captain America is also seen in AvX#4 (and elsewhere), and Emma Frost telepathically picks it up, resulting in groups of Avengers and X-Men going to the Moon too in that issue.

The Death Commandos will turn up alive in #13.
