Wolverine And The X-Men (2011 series) #10 cover

Story Name:

Avengers vs X-Men ... vs X-Men

Synopsis

Wolverine And The X-Men (2011 series) #10 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

Last issue ended with Wolverine joining the Avengers to confront Cyclops' X-Men on Utopia Island (in Av Vs XM #1). The Phoenix Force is (destructively) coming to Earth for Hope Summers (or so everybody believes) and the Avengers want to take her into 'protective custody'. Cyclops on the other hand believes that when they meet it will be the salvation of mutantkind. The 2 sides clashed in AvsX#2, and a flashback at the beginning of this issue shows a bit of that.

Now (within AvX#3) Logan temporarily returns to the Jean Grey School in Westchester and meets up with his co-Head Kitty Pryde. He and the TV news confirm that the Utopia X-Men have disappeared, as separately has Hope, and SHIELD have taken over the Island (and in Avengers Academy #29-31 we have seen that the Utopia X-students have been relocated there). But then Cyclops and Emma Frost turn up at the front door via a portal created by Magik.

Rachel Grey and Iceman are also watching the news. They didn't join the battle, Bobby Drake because he didn't know which side to be on. Changing the subject Rachel says she's finished her psychic evaluation of Angel and has concluded that there's no trace within him of Bobby's old friend Warren Worthington. Whatever's in there now was born anew and has very rapidly developed into a fully-rounded but totally different person who believes he's a real angel, and Beast has discovered that he's powered by a strange and powerful energy. Then they go investigate the commotion outside ...

... where Wolvie has sicced Krakoa on Cyclops, the ground beneath their feet. Frost responds by turning into her diamond form and punching Logan in the face. Iceman tries to intercede but Illyana Rasputina uses her Soulsword to melt his shoulder and the mistress of Limbo is gratified to learn that it causes him pain. Emma exchanges insults with Kitty and Rachel. But Scott Summers blasts free of Krakoa and says they surrender but he wants to talk with Logan alone. They meet beneath Jean Grey's statue where Cyke says it's time for all mutants to stand together, and he asks Logan for the final time which side is he on - Avengers or X-Men?

In another interlude the winged Angel flies up into the atmosphere to prove to everyone that he *is* a real Angel. He's watched by Husk and Doop with students Anole, Broo, Hellion, Oya and Trance. But Genesis is more interested in looking up Apocalypse in the database, who the other kids keep comparing him to. Evan Sabahnur tells Husk that he looks something like him but his parents raised him to be nothing like that villain. Meanwhile Angel tries to make it into space but runs out of air, collapses and falls back towards the Earth.

Wolverine stalks into the School with Cyclops following and they're still arguing. Logan says he didn't stop being an X-Man he just stopped agreeing with *him*. Scott says the Phoenix Force never destroyed the world in its earlier visits, and he believes the Phoenix *gave* them Hope to give them hope. Logan just thinks he wants Hope to become the next Phoenix to give him a weapon to make the world 'respect' mutants, and that's a *big* gamble. Scott warns him there'll be no quarter given in this fight, and no going back for mutants who side with the enemy.

Evan goes outside to ask Angel a favour but he sees him falling from the sky and activates his boot jets to save him. Angel recovers and explains that he was trying to fly to Heaven, but his failure suggests that he *isn't* an angel. Evan asks him what he sees within him. Angel replies "Only goodness", but really he sees Apocalypse.

Cyclops gives up trying to change Wolverine's mind but reminds him that he's dragging the rest of the X-people here down with him. The Headmistresses of this school and the Utopia Island version bitch at each other. And Quentin Quire compliments Magik on her bad girl attitude and suggests they date. She turns him down flat and the Utopia trio leave the way they came. But Rachel, Bobby, Gambit and Chamber say they're going to join them for various reasons. Rachel in particular reminds Logan that that *she*'s controlled the Phoenix Force so she wants to help Hope. And Iceman comments that Jean Grey died twice and he wasn't there both times, so now he thinks she'd want him to help Hope too. Angel now says he wants to join them. Husk leads the students (now including Rockpile and Glob Herman) back inside, but Idie Okonkwe hangs back to ask Prof Logan to make sure nothing bad happens to her friend Hope. And he gets the call from Captain America (for the rest of AvX#3 which starts the hunt for Hope).

On the last page we see the Shi'ar Death Commandos landing on Earth to kill the Phoenix Host (Hope) and anyone who gets in their way.

Wolverine And The X-Men (2011 series) #10 Review by (November 8, 2025)
As mentioned in the synopsis this issue fits within Avengers Vs X-Men #3.

This issue has 4 inkers Tim Townsend, Jaime Mendoza and Al Vey joined by Victor Olazaba.

Jean Grey died twice. 1st in the classic X-Men #137 after she became Dark Phoenix. But that turned out to not really be her but the Phoenix Force replacing her since XM#101, and she turned up in suspended animation in Avengers #263/Fantastic Four #286/X-Factor #1. She was killed 'again' by Xorn in New XM #150.

In response to that Rachel Summers dropped the name Phoenix and adopted Jean's original id Marvel Girl in X-Treme XM #46, and changed her real name to Rachel Grey in Uncanny XM #444.

The story of Evan Sabahnur and Angel the angel span out of the Uncanny X-Force series. Apocalypse was resurrected as a child in UXF#1, but Fantomex killed him in #4. Fantomex then created the clone Evan in #7 and raised him in a simulated environment as a good person. But Angel was becoming the new Apocalypse. In #18 Evan emerged as Genesis and helped the UXF destroy his mind. Evan and the new Angel joined the Jean Grey School in this series.

Various Shi'ar Death Commandos were previously seen in UXM#467-471, XM: Emperor Vulcan #3 and War Of Kings #4.

The story of the Westchester School within AvX will continue in X-Men: Legacy #266-267.
