Synopsis

Avengers, The (1963 series) #354 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 5 stars
The Grim Reaper sits upon his throne and gloats as he watches in a mystic fire, the Avengers being defeated by his minions the Legion of the Unliving. Trapped in the darkness, Black Knight is able to draw his laser sword and light up the area. But the scuffle has caused his wound to reopen and his undead opponents, Black Knight, Red Guardian, and Baron Zemo smell fresh blood and swarm him, biting into his flesh….

Vision keeps Amenhotep at bay with his eye beams but he realizes they are in a stalemate and so makes a strategic retreat, vanishing through the ceiling….

Hercules is being buffeted from both sides by Count Nefaria and Varanus the Star-Stalker. Eventually Herc falls, senseless, to the floor and the monsters approach to feed….

Crystal unleashes fire and ice powers against the fiery Inferno but they are of no use. She switches powers, bringing the stone ceiling down on him and sealing it with ice but Inferno breaks free in seconds….

Sersi unleashes energy blasts from her eyes on Nebulon but it only empowers him. She tries turning him into a rat or a pig or a frog but as a shapeshifter, Nebulon is able to resume his natural form with ease….

As Grim Reaper gloats over his victories, Vision appears before him, challenging him. The Reaper curses him but Vision reminds him that he cannot die and he cannot feel fear so the villain’s power over him is limited. Grim Reaper vows revenge against the Avengers who killed him; Vision reminds him that he died by his own hand. It takes a moment but the memory pierces his brain and with that, the Legion of the Unliving and the Unquiet Dead are freed from Grim Reaper’s power and come after him, seeking revenge. The Avengers arrive to see Grim Reaper borne down by his enemies. Then Lloigoroth breaks through the wall and seizes the Grim Reaper, the fingers forcing him into the mouth in the palm of the giant hand and devouring him before departing. A vortex carries the Avengers back to the cavern where they started. Exiting, they see the Quinjet parked under a sunny sky.

Review / Commentaries

Avengers, The (1963 series) #354 Review by (July 11, 2025)
Comments: “Fear the Reaper – Part III of III”—Cover. Title: “The Conqueror Worm” is a term for death, as in the same-titled poem by Edgar Allan Poe. Grim Reaper will return in WONDER MAN (1991) #22-25. The Grim Reaper died in VISION AND THE SCARLET WITCH (1985) #2 and was raised as a zombie in later issues before dying again in #12; he was raised again in AVENGERS WEST COAST #65. This Legion of the Unliving will return in AVENGERS (1998) #10-11. Second appearance of the Lovecraft-inspired ancient deity Lloigoroth; his third and final appearance is in DOCTOR STRANGE, SORCERER SUPREME #54. Hercules recalls towing Manhattan to its proper place in MARVEL TEAM-UP #28. Letters page includes one by future comics artist Delmo Walters Jr.

Review: And the grim tale wraps up with the reappearance of the Lovecraftian nasty that is Lloigoroth, whom I have already compared to DC Comics’ Ten-Eyed Man, perhaps their silliest villain—putting your eyeballs on your fingertips would only make dexterity impossible to keep from hurting those sensitive organs. Meanwhile, the eyes would be useless as the fingertips lack optic nerves, lenses, rods and cones, etc. Rearden would be unable to scratch himself, use a keyboard, etc. without severe discomfort. But I digress….
Still the cover is creepy and perhaps it would have been more effective had Lloigoroth not been such a clearly human hand. The climax to the tale is quite satisfying and the Grim Reaper gets what he deserves. The plot might not have been very complex but it didn’t need to be: revenge was the motive, setting undead nasties on the heroes was the means. A very nice departure from the norm. Next up: back to a science fiction menace.
