Synopsis

Avengers, The (1963 series) #351 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars
The Avengers and the Starjammers have arrived in the hangar to discover that Raza has just killed Dane “Black Knight” Whitman. Hercules grabs Raza, intending to kill him for his crime but Ch’od leaps to his comrade’s defense, clobbering both Herc and Thor. Corsair draws his gun but Vision knocks him out with a hand though his chest. Ch’od runs off with Raza, Herc confronts Corsair who has no idea what his comrades are doing. Hepzibah denies everything. Lockjaw brings Quicksilver back from the moon with the Inhumans doctor Galen to tend to the injured Dane along with the Starjammers’ medical robot Sikorsky. Black Widow assigns Thor, Hercules, Sersi, and Vision to search the city for Raza. Corsair wants to join them but the others balk at that so Hepzibah offers to remain as a hostage. And Binary insists on joining the search team….

Raza and Ch’od walk the rainy streets of Manhattan, Ch’od growing concerned that his comrade has not made any claims to innocence. Then the Avengers arrive and Sersi takes on Raza while Thor and Hercules battle Ch’od. Raza turns his hand into a sword and threatens the heroes; Vision arrives and Raza slashes at him but only shatters his hand on the diamond-hard Synthezoid. Thor takes down Ch’od. Corsair and Binary arrive to prevent any further violence. And Carol sits Raza down for a talk….

Back at the Mansion, Sikorsky prepares to operate on Dane while Hepzibah predicts his death. An irritated Natasha tells her to act like a hostage and stay in her room….

Corsair explains to the Avengers that Carol and Raza have a special bond from their time together in the Starjammers; he also insists Raza must have had a good reason for attacking the Black Knight. Vision apologies for overreacting earlier. Raza confesses to his comrades that the Kree had promised to reunite him with his son Rion, showing Carol the boy’s medallion. Carol takes the medallion and destroys it, to Raza’s shock and anger. She explains that the medallion was a memory implant device the Kree used to control his mind, making him believe he had a son….

At the Mansion, Galen and Sikorsky predict that Dane will recover, the robot explaining that Raza clearly did not try to kill his victim. Natasha and Crystal are suspicious of Hepzibah and later catch her in the act of trying to poison Dane. But the others arrive at this point and the moment passes….

Later, Dane meets with Raza, Carol having told him that Raza was mind-controlled so Dane forgives him. Both the Avengers and Starjammers invite Binary to rejoin them but she declines both offers, wanting to visit her parents. The Starjammers depart as well…

…and Hepzibah asks Raza if she was mind controlled too. But Raza confesses that there was no memory inducer. Carol lied to the Avengers for him so that he would be free to search for his son but he will always be haunted by the murder he tried to commit….

Review / Commentaries

Avengers, The (1963 series) #351 Review by (June 21, 2025)
Part two of two parts. The cover is misleading as Raza and Binary are friends and do not fight; besides, she’d turn him into pudding if they were genuine enemies. Sole appearance of Inhuman doctor Galen. Odd Bit: Marvel Database lists Dr. Keith Kincaid as appearing in the issue; there is an unidentified man with his face hidden at Dane’s bedside but this man is never seen again and there is no mention of Kincaid being in the story or Dane having any other medical assistance than Galen and Sikorsky. ‘Tis a mystery. Letters page includes one by future comics creator Jan C. Childress and one by noted letterhack Joey Marchese.

Review: Nice wrap up with a startling resolution. After some skirmishing the tale then has a heart to heart talk between Binary, who is not usually seen in Avengers stories, and Raza, whose guest appearances are mainly confined to X-Men titles. And the result of this talk? Binary lies to the Avengers as it’s the only excuse they would allow for someone trying to kill one of their people. It was a bold strategy and it seems to have paid off as Black Knight never again thinks of Raza as far as I can tell. A hero lying to smooth over a dangerous difficulty is coldly cynical and I wouldn’t want to recommend it but sometimes there doesn’t seem any other way to go.
