Synopsis

Avengers, The (1963 series) #350 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 4 stars
On Seti Tatola IV, a sinister Kree meets secretly with Hepzibah and Raza of the Starjammers. He wishes to hire them to assassinate Black Knight of the Avengers for killing the Kree’s Supreme Intelligance. Hepzibah is delighted to do it for money but Raza insists he is no assassin. The Kree shows Raza a medallion which he gave to his son many years ago, offering to reunite him with his lost family if he does the job. Raza reluctantly agrees….

At Avengers Mansion the team (Black Widow, Vision, Crystal, Thor, Hercules) are meeting with Professor Xavier and Cyclops, with Quicksilver visiting his ex-wife and baby. Also present are Carol Danvers and Valerie Cooper. Xavier is warning them about the Acolytes, a mutant sect that worships Magneto. He warns them that these fanatics may wish to harm baby Luna as she is Magneto’s granddaughter and human which is not in accord with their beliefs about Magneto. Pietro goes off with Crystal to discuss the matter. Xavier speaks privately to Binary about Lilandra….

Aboard the Starjammers ship, Raza and Hepzibah have persuaded Corsair to fly to Earth, ostensibly to visit their old comrade Binary. Ch’od jokes that Raza is in love with her but it just makes Raza angry. Raza tries to psych himself up for murder….

At the Mansion, Dane “Black Knight” Whitman is battling training robots as an excuse for not attending the meeting. Thor and Hercules arrive and ask him about his absence and he replies angrily, puzzling his teammates. Dane stalks out and runs into Crystal and Pietro; he excuses himself hastily, embarrassed that he is in love with her. Dane goes up to the roof for privacy and encounters Sersi. He confides in her that his conscience is bothering him about his killing the Supreme Intelligence. She responds by kissing him passionately, confusing him. Before he can respond, the Starjammers land on the roof….

The assembled heroes enjoy snacks provided by Jarvis. Corsair catches Xavier up on interplanetary news, Marilla enters to take care of the baby. Natasha asks Marilla if she has seen Dane; Marilla suggests the hangar and offers to go look for him. Ch’od asks Hepzibah if she has seen Raza; she is evasive….

Raza sneaks into the hangar where Dane is working on a skycar. He attacks the unwary knight and Dane dodges and comes up with his laser sword and they start dueling violently. Their fight shakes the building so everyone rushes to investigate. Dane reverses the sword’s energy field, strengthening his fist for some hand-to-hand combat but Raza is able to correct for it. Marilla and the baby enter and surprise the duelists. Raza grabs Luna and threatens to kill the kid unless Dane surrenders. He leaps forward and Raza stabs him through the midsection. As Dane collapses to the floor, Raza confesses he would not have hurt the child. And then the Avengers and the Starjammers arrive to find Dane apparently dead…so Hercules grabs Raza by the throat….

Marilla and baby Luna are in the kitchen, the nanny’s endless tirade about the poor quality of Earth food, slowly driving Jarvis crazy until he explodes and orders her out of the kitchen. Grumbling, she takes Luna to another room to watch television but the Avengers dashing out on an emergency call distracts her. She decides that a quiet day in the park is what she and the baby need so they head out, Marilla unaware that a) Jarvis has placed a sign reading, “Queen of Mean” on her back and b) the park is very crowded with noisy activities….

Review / Commentaries

Avengers, The (1963 series) #350 Review by (June 13, 2025)
Comments: First story: Part one of two parts. Black Knight killed the Supreme Intelligence in issue #347. The X-Men fought the Acolytes in X-MEN (1991) #1-3. Second story: Cameos by Captain America, Vision, Black Widow, Black Knight, Hercules, and Sersi on their way to Infinity War. Marilla is a big fan of children’s series FRAGGLE ROCK (1983-1987). The 3rd story is reprinted from AVENGERS #53, where the Avengers fought the X-Men. Issue includes a gatefold cover, front and back, with reprints of famous covers and a blueprint of the new Avengers Mansion. Letters page includes one by future CGC President Matt Nelson.

Review: The main story is nice adventure tale with Raza and Hepzibah hired to murder Black Knight which they do (well, Raza at least). The bulk of the tale seems to be setting up a later adventure featuring the Acolytes so it probably materialized in an X-Men comic. Herein the overcrowded tale quickly narrows into an extended fight scene which is very well done, thrilling and promising more next time. Very nicely done.

Second story: Some nice art doesn’t make up for a pointless trifle, centering on Marilla, one of the least appealing characters to show up in this title. Really, what’s the point?
