Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes II #5 Review by (April 13, 2020)

Review: And with this magical edition, Joe Casey retcons what may be the stupidest plot point in Avengers history, namely, that the Avengers wouldn’t recognize Hank Pym if he were wearing a different mask. In a brilliant master stroke, we are told that everyone recognized him immediately but they were advised to play along with his obvious mental illness. Thus, everyone is now looking at each other with a “Can you believe this?” expression on their faces while Jan’s fainting comes not from thinking Hank is dead but freaking out because he’s insane. Then again, it goes on a bit too long even with the omission of the long account of Yellowjacket’s “murder” of Hank Pym. And a bunch of Debbie Downers tell “Luke Charles” that his task of educating inner city kids is hopeless. And crazy Jasper Sitwell (didn’t he used to be a good guy in IRON MAN?) is harassing Vision over whether he is blood brothers with the Super-Adaptoid. And this is the high point of the series.

Comments: Issue is an expanded version of AVENGERS #59.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes II #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

A gang of crooks are interrupted in their exercise by a new costumed hero, the Yellowjacket; he beats them up and leaves them for the police….

At P.S. 75, new teacher Luke Charles (the Black Panther’s secret identity) wants to know more about the class misfit Delroy Watkins and gets an earful about the dangerous kids and he is warned not to threaten the status quo….

Hawkeye calls his lover Black Widow, trying to patch up their relationship but she can’t talk as she is at work…aboard the SHIELD Helicarrier. Director Dum Dum Dugan tells her to get back to work so she hangs up on Clint but not before telling him that Jasper Sitwell will be visiting the Avengers that evening….

Agent Sitwell arrives at Avengers Mansion with Special Agent Carver from the Psych Department. They will be questioning the Vision as to whether he allowed the Super-Adaptoid to escape (last issue). Hawkeye bursts in and begins arguing with Sitwell and Black Panther explains to the SHIELD man that they are hunting the fugitive android. Then the Avengers are summoned upstairs…

…where they meet Yellowjacket, who broke in and tied up Jarvis and now he’s demanding that he be inducted into the Avengers while flirting with Wasp. The problem is that everyone knows immediately that it’s Hank Pym in the costume. In the next room, Sitwell demands an explanation as to Hank’s actions; Agent Carver suggests that Hank is suffering from schizophrenia and advises them to humor him and play along with his pretentions to forestall a complete breakdown. A distraught Jan thinks that would be abandoning Hank when he needs them most; Panther suggests they continue to observe Hank and go back to meet with Yellowjacket. The new guy also demands to be the new chairman of the team and claims to have killed Hank Pym, further upsetting Jan. He fires his weird gun at Hawkeye, Vision, and Panther and insists on taking Jan out to dinner….
