Captain America returns from an adventure in South America (seen in AVENGERS #15) to the startling news that his teammates are leaving to deal with personal issues. But they have left him with three replacements, all former villains—Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver—who he does not know....

Cap hurries to get to the press conference Iron Man had already set up but he doesn't get there fast enough before Hawkeye has the new Avengers give a demonstration of their talents. Cap hurriedly introduces them to the crowd—as a reporter asks about Quicksilver's and the Witch's former association with the mutant terrorist Magneto and Hawkeye's past as a bad guy. And Hawkeye doesn't help that he sounds like he is the team leader. The hostile questioning causes Wanda to walk out on the event....

Meanwhile, watching on TV are the Frightful Four—Wizard, Medusa, Sandman, Trapster—and the Wizard decides to attack the Avengers before the Avengers come after them....

Pietro suggests to a tearful Wanda that they leave the team but she decides against it, they have to keep their commitment. Cap finds Hawkeye packing but Clint changes his mind when he learns they have a butler. At this point the Frightful Four arrive and the Avengers go out to meet them. Within seconds, Wizard shoots down Quicksilver, Medusa entangles Hawkeye in her hair, Sandman clobbers Cap, and Trapster shoots paste in Scarlet Witch's face. The Wasp sees this on TV and is stunned....
