As the Vulture aims to bare down on an injured
Spider-Man, J. Jonah Jameson angrily bemoans having no photographer there to
capture the battle of the century (his words). Joe Robertson then arrives on
the roof, having found one of their staff photographers. Spidey attempts to
fight off the Vulture but proves to have some difficulty gaining leverage due to
his injured arm. The Vulture narrowly misses Spider-Man before Spidey seemingly
disappears! Vulture goes to investigate, and Spidey takes him by surprise,
grabbing him! However, Spider-Man can’t capitalize due to his arm and awkwardly
knocks the Vulture away. Spidey tries webbing the Vulture’s legs, who responds
by pulling Spidey over to the rooftop Jameson and Robbie are on and whipping
him into them! Jonah obviously thinks Spider-Man is trying to attack him while
Robbie keeps a cooler head.
Spider-Man narrowly avoids another attack from the
Vulture, but Robbie gets injured saving Jameson from the falling debris!
Jameson gets so angry at Spider-Man that he actually tries holding him so that
the Vulture can finish him off! Spidey avoids the Vulture once more and takes
the momentary respite to web up Jameson and check on Robbie. Elsewhere,
Mary Jane pops in on Aunt May and Anna Watson, sporting a new hairdo and
looking for Peter. MJ elects to look for him at the Coffee Bean, causing Aunt May
to characteristically worry. Meanwhile, Gwen finds her father, Captain Stacy, up and about. Not only that, Captain Stacy remembers everything
that went down when he was brainwashed and tells Gwen that Peter didn’t attack
him after all, and that Peter was trying to help him!
Gwen is elated to hear the news, and they soon
encounter Betty Brant and Ned Leeds, who notify them of the battle going on
overhead! Spidey continues to fight back against the Vulture, while feeling
weaker every second. Spidey tries grabbing onto the Vulture, but after a
furious assault, the Vulture knocks Spider-Man off him. Spidey falls to the
ground but is able to soften his landing with a quickly spun web-cushion! The
Vulture swoops down to check on his seemingly defeated foe, and Spidey reveals
he was playing possum! He grabs the Vulture’s pack that powers his wings and
damages it, causing the Vulture to fly off before he loses too much energy.
However, just after, Spidey succumbs from his injuries and passes out, left to
the mercy of the crowd! To be continued!
