Synopsis

Captain America (2018 series) #24 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

William Taurey is prisoner of the merciless Red Skull—inside the head of Aleksander Lukin who sees what the Skull is doing in his nightmares….

Sharon Carter tests her new, improved youthful body (courtesy of Shuri last issue) by sparring with Steve Rogers and they rekindle the romance they once had. Later, as they dine on take-out from one of Sharon’s favorite restaurants, she is concerned with old business: she can hear the voices of Selene’s victims calling for her to avenge them….

Alexa Lukin questions her husband about the Red Skull within him, dismissing his fears and, killing the maid with her mental powers, mildly mocking his moral code when he is shocked. She tells him not to fear the monster within him—but they will use him….

That night, Sharon reveals that the Secret Empire episode only showed her how out of touch she was with the people she was supposed to be protecting. But over the last few months she has grown and she is still an agent but she and Cap are the only agency left. Sharon gets a call from Toni Ho, having picked up Misty Knight’s signal in Madripoor. It indicates that Misty and her team—Dryad, Black Widow, Mockingbird, and Thunderbolt Ross—have been captured. And so Toni unveils the new armored suit she has designed for Sharon….

Captain America (2018 series) #24 Review by (October 14, 2020)

Review: Yeah, I know I’ve been a bit hard on Ta-Nehisi Coates over the run of this series. I’ve tended to overlook his mastery of characterization and his sharp dialogue, mostly complaining that his plots move very slowly, often lacking in any sense of urgency. And this issue is a fine example. We have two couples counterpointed: Steve and Sharon, and the Lukins. The good guy couple reconnect over a shared past while Sharon comes to a realization that he had a fundamental misunderstanding of her mission and is now revising it. The Lukins also deal with a shared past but he wants to be free of the Red Skull while she tells him to mean up and embrace having the sadistic monster inside of him. The dialogue is sharp, clearly delineating each character and we gain insights into both Sharon and Alexa Lukin. But the plot goes nowhere. It’s primarily these two couples talking. Neither sounds like anything is urgent, until the end because that’s when we find out that the team in Madripoor—who we haven’t heard from since issue #20 and I had forgotten why they were there. Just as I keep forgetting who the Power Elite is and why the good guys need to be worried about them, since the only person we’ve seen in a long time doing any real bad guy stuff is Selene and she was defeated last issue. So, with all apologies to Mr. Coates, is this story going anywhere soon? Oh, and props to Alex Ross for that nightmarish cover.

Comments: Issue includes a memorial to the late Chadwick Boseman written by Ta-Nehisi Coates with a portrait by Brian Stelfreeze. Steve Rogers does not appear in the guise of Captain America in this issue.
