Captain America #25 Review by (November 18, 2020)

Review: I’m confused: I was under the impression Marvel was hinting at some major development for the landmark issue #25 but we don’t get one. In fact, we don’t even get a complete story, it’s a long action scene that just comes to a stop as Dryad falls from a helicopter. Most of the characters are left with nothing to do and I had to look at the panels carefully to verify that Misty Knight and Crossbones are even in the issue. Again, Sharon Carter’s narration explaining Alexa Lukin and the Daughters of Liberty is nice though a) it seems irrelevant to the story and b) we had something similar in issue #19. No idea why this halted in the middle to make way for a second story. The second story is nice, summing up why Cap does what he does, featuring an explication of America’s promise of freedom, a promise that has gone a bit astray in recent years. It is a bit static and wordy and we’ve seen its like more than a few times over the years but it gets the job done. Overall, the issue seems to have been interrupted during production and a file story was added to create a “special” issue.

Comments: Extra-sized issue. And apologies: I misidentified Dryad as Black Widow from the red hair and similar costumes. The entry has been corrected to remove all evidence that comics fans with websites are fallible. [Smiley face emoji.]

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America #25 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

At a hotel in Madripoor, the bad guys (Red Skull, Alexa Lukin, Sin, Crossbones, and a bunch of guards) have captured some of the heroes (Misty Knight, Black Widow, General Thunderbolt Ross, Dryad, Mockingbird) and are threatening them with dire fates. But rescue is under way: Falcon flies to the top of the hotel, clobbers some guards, and shuts off the power. Winter Soldier blows up the air force, Sharon Carter in her new armor drops into the building while Captain America teleports in. There’s a big battle throughout the hotel, Dryad frees herself and pursues Alexa Lukin who is escaping in a helicopter; Dryad leaps and catches on to the runners but Alexa blasts her with a hand gesture and Dryad falls off….

“The Promise”

Writer: Anthony Falcone.  Art: Michael Cho.

Synopsis: Everyone is surprised when Captain America shows up at the funeral of Sung Jin Jeong, a Chinese immigrant and lawyer. Cap delivers the eulogy, explaining how, shortly after he had been rescued from the ice, he went to a diner where Sung Jin was working. Unaware that his Cap costume was peeking out, allowing Sung Jin to recognize him, Cap got to chatting with the man and learned they had much in common, both trying to find their way in an unfamiliar world. They kept in touch as Cap went on to be the leader of the Avengers and Sung Jin worked hard to earn a law degree. The biggest thing they had in common was that they were aware of America’s shortcomings and injustices but they never gave up fighting for the dream, the promise that America is a place where anyone can have a better life.
