Captain America #27 Review by (February 17, 2021)

Review: So Captain America has been cleared of all charges pending since this volume of his adventures began in 2018, only to have new accusations raised on the last page of the issue. As I’ve said before: Ta-Nehisi Coates provides great character moments but a plot that moves forward at a sluggish pace. This one is a bit more focused than most but I still keep wondering whether this extended (27 issues and counting) arc is heading toward some sort of climax.

Comments: Cameos by Black Widow, Winter Soldier, Thunderbolt Ross, Dryad, Agatha Harkness, Toni Ho, Falcon, Misty Knight, Thor, She-Hulk, and Black Panther reacting to the news. Cap uses the term F.O.H., front of house, meaning the public face of a movement.

Captain America #27 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Captain America has been exonerated of all charges against him and at a televised news conference he expresses gratitude and calls on all who are watching to believe in the American Dream once again….

At home, Aleksander Lukin explains his new plan to Sin, while donning the Red Skull mask and mocking

Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter listen to a news report of an anti-Cap rally in Central Park; Steve takes it seriously while Sharon accuses him of punishing himself. He explains that the present is a different world from the one he grew up in and he can’t understand it. Sharon persuades him to attend the rally. Steve uses an image inducer to change his identity, while Sharon watches from overhead using her new armor in Cloaking mode. The place is full of Red Skull-masked protestors, Watchdogs, Friends of Humanity, the Sons of Selene, and many other radical groups. When two groups start to fight, Cap and Sharon drop their disguises and intervene with the rally turning into chaos. Watching on TV, Red Skull/Lukin lectures Sin on how hate is not something to be implanted, it is already there waiting to be harnessed. When the police arrive and start arresting rioters, the explosives planted at the scene detonate, causing a great deal of carnage. The Red Skull then takes to the media to show film of Captain America assaulting “peaceful” protestors and denouncing him as a threat to America….
