Story Name:

To Be, or Not To Be, Broxton

Synopsis

Captain America (2023 series) #14 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Thor returns to the desolate Broxton, Oklahoma, to survey the ruins. He goes to a nearby town where he watches a documentary on the disaster in a store window, noting a glitch that suddenly appears in the middle of a shot of Bill Cobbs at his diner. The shop owner tells him that the documentary’s producers could not remove that. Thor is curious….

Peter Parker sits in a park, working up the courage to call Steve Rogers on the phone, wanting to hang out with him but remembering that their last meeting did not turn out well. He tries again but hangs up….

Thor consults with former SHIELD Agent Roz Solomon who has investigated the matter and discovered that every surveillance camera in use in the Broxton area shows that same distortion at that time. So something must have happened….

Steve Rogers is sitting at home, listening to music and reading a book, when there is a knock at the door. His neighbor Mrs. Rosen is concerned that he always seems sad lately and is checking up on him. He was recently reminded (by the Front Door Cabaret) what it was like to have friends. After his parents died, he turned inward and after that he was always focused on the Mission. She advises him to find friends besides Sharon, someone he can vent to. But Steve explains the “super-power identity protocol,” the factors that make it difficult for two heroes to hang around together. Mrs. Rosen leaves it up to him and departs. Then the call from Peter Parker comes through. They arrange to meet for dinner but then Thor shows up. Steve calls Pete back, asking him to come in his work clothes, and asking whether Thor knows his identity. After he has hung up, Pete wonders if Thor was there….

When Spider-Man arrives, Thor explains to him and Steve about how the glitch may explain how Broxton can be returned to the land of the living one more. Thor reveals that the destruction of the town has always been a source of grief to him; Steve echoes his feelings, for him it was the attack at Pearl Harbor. Spidey calls it a magical restore point, a moment when everything was good so that you can freeze it and, after everything has gone wrong, go back to it and put everything right. And we see the glitch occurring as Bill Cobb is flipping a burger at the diner…and vanishing. Steve and Spidey agree to help Thor fix the problem….

In a strange world where light and dark are reversed, a woman warrior slays an enemy knight with her sword then faces an oncoming band of enemies. She shouts her defiance: “Dark Asgard shall fall and the lost shall live again!”

Review / Commentaries

Captain America (2023 series) #14 Review by (October 30, 2024)

Review: Well, this looks cool—wait a minute. We’re getting an elaborate Thor story arc that looks like we’re going to bring back Broxton in Captain America’s comic? Does Al Ewing know about this? Still, it all looks promising, especially with the Dark Asgard stuff whetting our appetites. And Spidey is not yet annoying as he tends to be when guesting in other heroes’ titles. And Steve Rogers needs friends. And we learn too much about the super-power identity protocol.

Comments: Steve Rogers does not appear as Captain America in this issue. Broxton was destroyed by the God of Hammers in THOR (2022) #20. Spidey last teamed with Cap in issue #2 of this series, waiting for an adventure that never happened. Roz Solomon was introduced in THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #12 and appeared frequently in that title and MIGHTY THOR (2016), the Jane Thor series. William “Bill” Cobb III was introduced in THOR (2007) #2 and died heroically saving Balder’s life in THOR GIANT-SIZE FINALE #1 in 2009. And Steve loves Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue,” calling it a perfect piece of music.
