Synopsis

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty (2022 series) #8 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Captain America has suddenly found himself in Kansas with several days of his life missing; in that meantime, A.I.M. has captured Lower Manhattan and placed a force field around it. At a general store, Cap makes a phone call to activate the Captains Network….

In occupied Manhattan, Steve’s three college friends, David, Mia, and Hudson, worried over Steve’s disappearance, knock at his apartment door. Steve’s neighbor Amari tells them Steve’s gone. Then they run and hide from A.I.M. agents who burst into Steve’s apartment and blast the place with flamethrowers, hoping to kill Captain America. The four friends flee via fire escape and are caught by an AIM agent; they overpower him but there are more agents nearby and the group is taken prisoner….

Cap’s group has been assembled by Aaron Fischer, Captain of the Railways, in a rural area: Dryad, Nick Fury Jr., Sharon Carter, Roger Aubrey, and Redacted, Black Widow having gone to ground. They have all been dumped far from Manhattan and discover they have small scars behind the right ear, indicating someone has been probing their brains. Roger suggests that a psychic could help them and Cap knows one. He utters the secret word “Mommy” and Emma Frost appears, teleported by Lourdes Chantel. The heroes explain the situation and Emma offers to probe their collective minds to uncover what has happened to them. Peggy Carter refuses to let Emma mess with her brain so she probes the others. They learn they were all captured and brainwashed by a creature calling itself MODOC, Mental Organism Designed Only for Control. Coming out of the trance, the heroes are bitter about having their minds probed. Emma and Lourdes take their leave. That evening Steve tells Sharon they have to take the fight to the enemy, “This fight doesn’t need superheroes…it needs Invaders….”

Review / Commentaries

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty (2022 series) #8 Review by (January 4, 2023)

Review: Interesting issue with a major jump in plot as we find out Manhattan has been conquered by AIM—with a major blooper in that the story locates Steve’s apartment in Manhattan when previous issues set it in Brooklyn, specifically mentioning it is where Steve grew up. The new situation is mind-boggling and Emma Frost is an offbeat guest star. And there’s a cameo by Aaron Fischer from the Captains Network; to be honest, I didn’t know if we would ever see these people again. The new MODOC is just MODOK with mind control powers so the writers will have to do some heavy lifting to make him interesting. And Cap forms a new team yet again so we’ll have to see where this story goes.

Comments: Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. Luke Cage was elected Mayor of New York City in DEVIL’S REIGN: OMEGA #1 which wrapped up the DEVIL’S REIGN event (hence the name). Aaron Fischer, Captain of the Railways, was introduced in UNITED STATES OF CAPTAIN AMERICA #1. Lourdes Chantel was a minor character back in the day, a Black Queen in the Hellfire Club, recently revived for the MARAUDERS series in 2021, appearing in issues #22-27. First appearance of MODOC, Mental Organism Designed Only for Control.
