Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9 Review by (February 1, 2023)

Review: Story arc is shaping up. Issue is full of action, with several double page spreads. Meanwhile, there’s Peggy analyzing both Steve’s and Bucky’s actions and a look at the history of the Destroyer (and he has the coolest line is the issue, quoted in the synopsis). Cool all around.

Comments: Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly. Issue includes a tribute to the late Carlos Pacheco, penciler for Marvel and DC, including CAPTAIN AMERICA (2013 series).

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #9 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Manhattan has been surrounded by a force field, courtesy of A.I.M.; Mayor Luke Cage does not believe this is a mission for super-heroes but one for negotiators and the Thunderbolts agree. Meanwhile, Captain America and his new team (Dryad, Sharon Carter, Nick Fury Jr., Destroyer (Roger Aubrey having resumed his Wartime identity), and the Starpoint called Redacted) crash through the force field atop a train. Inside they split into three groups. Cap and Peggy head down into a huge pit to shut down the neganite reactor sought by A.I.M.; on the way, they bicker because Peggy knows this is all about trying to rescue Bucky Barnes who is now one of the Outer Circle and she defends his decision to attack the group from within….

Sharon and Roger locate and destroy the A.I.M. command center while Roger explains how he got his name: “Destroyer…isn’t a name. It’s a promise.”

Fury and Redacted free some prisoners and have David locate the baddies’ central prisoner hub which is Madison Square Garden. Several prisoners, including Mia, Amari, and Arlo, join Fury and Redacted, storming the Garden….

And then MODOC, Mental Organism Designed Only for Control, is activated and he seizes control of all of the heroes’ minds and they are helpless….
