Hawkeye: Freefall #5 Review by (October 12, 2020)

Review: Ronin’s reign of terror, underground fights, Hood 's disappointing birthday party, Linda’s defense of her goofy ex-boyfriend…and a shock ending with the attack on a likable new supporting character. Everything comes to a head next issue. I can hardly wait….

Comments: Kingpin more resembles Lex Luthor than the huge baddie of old.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Hawkeye: Freefall #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Late at night, Ronin breaks into Gracie Mansion, home of Mayor Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk to meet with Fisk over what to do about stopping the Hood. Fisk also wants Hood out of action because his exploits are making the city dangerous but declines to help; he brings in Count Nefaria as one who could stop Hood. But Nefaria asks for a two-million-dollar payoff and Ronin doesn’t have that kind of money and so he leaves….

Ronin steps up his reign of terror against the Hood, bribing cops to do their jobs honestly, publishing Hood’s private number, hijacking his trucks, beating his thugs, sinking his boats, and more until the Hood is frantic….

Ronin goes to a bar where underground fights are held. He enters the ring and defeats every challenger and picks up quite a lot of money betting on himself to win. But he is told the Hood also bet on him and apologizes for not being there….

Back at his hideout, Clint tries to think of more ways to harass the Hood. Bryce reveals it is the Hood’s birthday and he always celebrates by a movie and dinner at his favorite Chinese restaurant….

And so this year, the theater is closed due to a bomb threat and Hood heads to the restaurant to find Hawkeye waiting for him, having bought every table in the place. Hood sics three henchmen on Clint, who whups them handily. As Hood draws a gun to kill his nemesis, Clint introduces his dinner companion Wesley Welch, the Mayor’s assistant. He offers a subtle warning from Fisk to rein in his attempts to kill Ronin. Hood apologizes and fades away. Wesley leaves. Clint ponders….

Bullseye forces the Skrull disguised as Hawkeye to locate Bryce; once done, the assassin kills the hapless alien….

The wounded Clint goes to the apartment of his girlfriend, Linda “Night Nurse” Carter, apologizing and asking to be let in. He is interrupted by Spider-Man and brings up his lie about a secret mission for Captain America—but Spidey has brought Cap with him. Cap wants to know what is going on with Clint—but Linda comes out and scolds/rebukes/admonishes Cap and Spidey that they can give their longtime teammate the benefit of the doubt and they leave. Once they are gone, Linda breaks up with Clint….

Clint arrives home, to find a tape recording from Bullseye waiting. He plays it and finds his nemesis has revealed Clint’s Ronin identity to the Hood who has hired him to find proof that can be used to expose Clint. But first Hood requests a meeting with Clint, Bullseye has stolen the Ronin costume, and Bryce is near death, having been shot through with multiple arrows….
