Heroes Reborn #1 Review by (May 7, 2021)

Review: Now this is an event! A crazy alternate history where finding out where the familiar faces are now is half the fun. And Ed McGuiness’ solid art gives all of the action scenes a great deal of heft. And a few double page spreads emphasize it even better. Black Skull, Red Skull and Venom combined, is the scariest thing I’ve seen lately. And there’s something really off with the grinning President Coulson. Can’t wait to see where this all goes—and it won’t be a long wait in this weekly miniseries.

Comments: Same name but no relation to the Marvel program of the 1990s when they contracted out several properties to outside creators. Whizzer of the Squadron Supreme has been renamed Blur because the original name wasn’t silly until recent years.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Heroes Reborn #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Blade awakens in a flophouse in London with no idea of how he got there. He tries to call the Avengers for assistance and learns that the Avengers have never existed. He investigates: Jennifer Walters is a successful lawyer in Los Angeles; Bruce Banner turned into the Hulk once and was banished to the Negative Zone forever; Carol Danvers is a USAF pilot with a history of insubordination; Tony Stark is a hard-drinking playboy who was never injured; Robbie Reyes thinks Ghost Rider is a new street drug; there’s a head shop in Greenwich Village where Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum should be; Wakanda does not exist on any map; Iron Fist never left Tibet; Captain America went missing in action at the end of World War 2. And it’s all because the Squadron Supreme prevented the need for any more heroes….

Doctor Doom, exiled from Latveria through a fair election, attacks the White House, seeking to conquer the United States. He holds the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak and transforms into Dr. Juggernaut; Hyperion arrives to take him on with his sunlight powers….

And Doom is not alone, he’s joined by the Masters of Doom: Nighthawk enters the Capitol where the Black Skull (Red Skull powered by the Venom symbiote) and his minions are holding Congress hostage….

The super-fast Blur battles Wanda Maximoff, the Silver Witch who has absorbed the powers of her late brother Pietro….

At the Lincoln Memorial, Power Princess battles her nemesis, All-Gog (Mangog after destroying all of the Norse pantheon, except one)….

Dr. Spectrum flies out to intercept something coming in through space, as the Air Force, including Carol Danvers, is told to stand down. And then Spectrum meets the foe he thought dead: Thanos, with all of the Infinity Rings….

Brief flashback: Blade discovered Thor getting drunk in a tavern and guesses this is the result of his people being wiped out and never finding Mjolnir. Thor gets surly and ends up vomiting on Blade’s shoes….

Back to the present: Blade joins Nighthawk in battling Black Skull’s minions in the Capitol and he learns that Nighthawk recognizes him—as a criminal. But Blade also realizes that Nighthawk also knows the truth of the disordered world and he leaves….

President Phil Coulson watches the fight between Hyperion and Doctor Doom and revels in the beauty of superheroes in action….

At the tavern, Thor strikes his drinking horn on the bar and it transforms into Mjolnir. Meanwhile, on a trek to the Arctic, Blade discovers Captain America frozen in the ice….
