Synopsis

The Invaders #35 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Summoned back to the US, Invaders, Captain America, Sub-Mariner, and Human Torch arrive in New York to investigate reports of an enemy saboteur who can fly in a heavy metal suit. Whizzer of the Liberty Legion finds them and tells them this story....

The members of the Legion were having one of their regular meetings, debating whether to inform the government of their secret identities and let the feds decide whether to draft them (though Red Raven and Jack Frost have no secret identities). Patriot would also like someone else to act as leader, suspecting he was only chosen because he reminds everyone of Captain America (he's right). They decide to table those two matters while they honor the FBI's request to investigate the loyalty of various German-American groups. A disguised Miss America visits a bar frequented by German Americans and sees elderly Professor Schneider forced out of the place by two men against his will. In costume she follows them until they meet up with a baddie called Iron Cross. The heroine does battle with the surprisingly quick and agile armored villain and accidentally knocks herself out dodging an attack. The rest of the Legion arrives—Patriot, Whizzer, Thin Man, Red Raven, Jack Frost, and Blue Diamond—and demands they surrender and hand over Professor Schneider and Miss America. Iron Cross takes down each of the heroes in seconds, leading Whizzer to run off and find the newly-arrived Invaders to ask for help....

Review / Commentaries

The Invaders #35 Review by (February 12, 2019)

Review: Another issue top heavy with heroes and featuring yet another German stereotype of a villain—couldn't they just bring back Teutonic Knight? There's a nice fight scene between Miss America and Iron Cross; too bad she looks like an idiot knocking herself out. One nice touch: the issue includes hints of a romance developing between Miss America and the Whizzer; good move since GIANT SIZE AVENGERS #1 has already revealed they they would be married after the War and become the parents of Nuklo (and possibly Quicksilver and the Scarlet Witch, though this was later proved false). The oddest bit: go back and look at the cover; what is this secret that was never even hinted at in the comic?

Comments: Part one of three parts. Issue includes a roster of the Liberty Legion's members and a recap of issues #5-6 and MARVEL PREMIERE #29-30. First appearance of Iron Cross (Helmut Gruler); his daughter Clare takes on the identity in ALL-NEW INVADERS #9. Nick Fury, Dum-Dum Dugan, Reb Ralston, and Gabe Jones have a cameo, spotting the Invaders in the street. Just as with Wonder Woman and the Justice Society of America in the real 1940s, the Liberty Legion's sole female member is also the secretary. Alan Kupperberg (framing) and Don Heck (main story) are co-credited with the pencils.

Period Pop-Culture Details: Seen on various movie marquees: ARABIAN NIGHTS (1942), THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS, WOMAN OF THE YEAR, WHITE CARGO, HIGH SIERRA some with stars listed. Advertisements for Planter's Peanuts and Coca Cola (“the pause that refreshes”) also appear. Buck Rogers film serials. Miss America refers to Iron Cross as a “refugee from THE WIZARD OF OZ.”
