Loki #5 Review by (May 25, 2020)

Review: And all the stuff I was looking forward to last issue just vanishes into the hither and yon. Them’s the breaks when a title is cancelled unexpectedly, though it seems that the writers were given the opportunity to turn this issue into Loki’s retrospective on his character as the God of Stories and to return Verity Willis to his ongoing adventures (just in time for them to stop being ongoing). The lengthy banter between Loki and Verity gets a bit opaque at times (though never has hard to follow as Al Ewing’s mystical philosophizing in THE IMMORTAL HULK) and I’m not sure what we’re being told. Or why Loki in The Raft resembles a colorless Keanu Reeves. But the issue is quite entertaining nevertheless though Wolverine’s contribution seems to be cut short in favor of Verity’s.

Comments: Final issue of series. Verity Willis was a major character from Loki’s previous title, LOKI, AGENT OF ASGARD. Cameos from Loki’s memories include Thor, Odin, the Warriors Three, and Iron Man. Loki’s favorite film THE WIZARD OF SPEED AND TIME (1988) is a real, if not well known, movie. Loki makes a snide reference to the Joker, resenting his being compared to the playing card (though we know he also means the Batman villain). A note from Daniel Kibblesmith on the series’ abrupt cancellation appears at the end of the letters column.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Loki #5 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Loki is a prisoner in The Raft, the jail for supervillains, relating this story to his unseen guest….

“The Man From Up North” features Loki as a diabolical gameplayer in the Old West, helping mercenary troubleshooter Wolverine track down the gang responsible for a bloody bank robbery. Loki strolls into the saloon where the bank gang is hanging out and playing cards; he puts on his “devilish tempter” act and one of the crooks shoots him in the head. But Loki sits up a few minutes later (a horned crown does supply skull protection) and then Wolverine walks in and a huge battle breaks out…and Loki realizes that before he was the God of Stories he was the God of Outcasts.

Loki drew his guest there with the promise of one last story and wants to know if he’s telling the truth or not because he wants to know if his head full of memories is real—and that the approaching danger is something to fear. It turns out he’s talking to Verity Willis who can detect any lie—and she knows that everything Loki is saying is becoming true just as he recalls it. So he breaks out of prison, opens a portal, and invites Verity to join him in a story that is far from over….
