Marvel Premiere #29 Review by (July 3, 2018)

Review: Roy Thomas really loves Golden Age heroes and teams, making his greatest love Golden Age heroes in teams and here we have his second in a few months. Too many heroes tends to mean each one gets a couple of panels to shine while they all mostly biff baddies for the rest of the page count. And I say, So what? Let the man do what he likes and share it with the rest of us who are interested. More power to ya, Roy!

Comments: Part two of four parts. First appearance of the Liberty Legion, newly created by Roy Thomas using authentic 1940s Timely heroes.

Period Pop-Culture Details: The feuds of radio/movie stars, Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Jack Benny and Fred Allen, W.C. Fields and Charlie McCarthy; bandleader Kay Kyser (misspelled as Kaiser); THE THIN MAN movie and TV series featuring William Powell (movies) and Peter Lawford (TV); the Lone Ranger on radio; John Wayne western movies; and a quote from CASABLANCA, which would have been released about a year after this story is set.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Marvel Premiere #29 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Story continued from THE INVADERS #5.

With the other Invaders having been captured and brainwashed by the Red Skull, Bucky fights his way into a radio studio, interrupting a broadcast by the Patriot. There is a bit of fuss as Bucky establishes his credentials and his plan allowed by the station owners but Bucky joins the Patriot on the air, inviting any other super-heroes to band together to rescue the Invaders from the enemy. The broadcast over, Bucky and Patriot look over FBI's dossiers on the other costumed adventurers as we (the readers) see them in action...

Red Raven (winged fellow raised by a race of birdmen) intercepts a plane full of Nazi agents up to no good but he is overpowered and taken captive. However, the Thin Man (who can flatten his body) also intercepts the plane, sliding in through a closed door and freeing Red Raven and together they defeat the Nazis and take over the plane....

Elsewhere, the super-fast Whizzer outruns a train and scoops up a bomb from the tracks and hurls it away. The saboteurs try to escape but the flying Miss America swoops down and captures them....

At the Museum of Natural History in New York, explorer Elton Morrow is lecturing when masked Nazis take everyone in the auditorium hostage. Morrow sneaks off and returns as the super-dense Blue Diamond and clobbers the baddies....

Soon all of these heroes meet up at the radio station with Bucky and Patriot. Suddenly one of the engineers knocks out Whizzer (the only one fast enough to stop him), revealing himself as a Nazi spy, planning to explode a bomb and taking all the heroes out at once. Even more suddenly, the bomb in the spy's hand is encased in ice signaling the arrival of another hero: the super-cold Jack Frost. The various heroes agree to join forces and Bucky dubs them the “Liberty Legion!”

Story continues in THE INVADERS #6.
