Story Name:

America Chavez part 5

Synopsis

Marvel's Voices Infinity Comic (2022 series) #16 synopsis by reviewer Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars

America Chavez helped Loki steal the Armour Of Sol from the Asgardian armoury, for a reason to be revealed this issue. The Valkyrie Hildegarde of the Warriors Three got sucked into the adventure and they are now in Weirdworld menaced by the Crimson Queen of the Kingdom Of The Torch who wants the Armour. She has Loki captive and the other 2 have been battling her soldiers with help from some opposition creatures. Last issue finished with Ogre General Eliad aiming a big cannon called the God Slayer at them.

The Queen has a drone showing Loki what's happening and she tells him she'll give the order to fire unless he gives her the Armour. But we concentrate on the 2 females having a well-earned rest while a large frog medic treats Hildy's wound and America regains some of her waning superstrength. They eat some fruit while Chavez explains Loki's reason for stealing the Armour.

A long time ago when Loki was young (the 1st time around) Odin wearing the Armour Of Sol took him on a trip into space in his magic Viking ship Skidbladnir. Odin says he's noticed that Loki spends too much time alone and he regrets spending so much time grooming Thor to be his successor that he's neglected his other 'son'. So he's taking this day to be with Loki alone. And he tells him a story to explain the Armour.

In the early days of the universe light tried to form a planet but it collapsed and spread as fragments all over the universe. The Asgardians gathered some of the bits and created this very powerful Armour which "can release immense light energy and will protect its wearer at all cost". He used it once in battle long ago but it takes half a millennia to replenish its energy when exhausted.

He also says that the Armour wakes for a recurring natural phenomenon which is why he's wearing it at this time and place, and why it's glowing. The light planet produced 1 life-form before it expired, and Loki sees a rare Celestial Fish migration (which we unfortunately don't get shown). Odin adds that he's brought fishing rods so they can catch a fish or 2, and of course release them. He makes Loki promise that when he's old enough (in a millenium) he'll treat his father to a fishing trip like this.

Now Loki allows Magma Men to unshackle his wrists and take the Armour and give it to the Queen. She's still holding the threat of the big cannon over him so he allows them to put the antimagic cuffs back on. However they don't notice he's now got a lockpick between his teeth (but he uses the word 'pick' to alert us readers).

Hildegarde tells America she wouldn't have believed Loki's story, and now they've brought a dangerous weapon into a civil war so they better get it out of the Queen's grasp. The biplane-flying dog called Commander Spot (from last issue) pops up to agree with her. He also informs them that the Crimson Queen has a minion called the Geomancer. If she's endangered she can get him to magically move her castle and kingdom to anywhere on Weirdworld.

The Queen's now wearing the Armour and Loki's burying his head in his hands in shame and despair. But it was only a pretence while he picked the locks of the manacles. Now he creates multiple copies of himself all armed with his sceptre to menace the Queen and confuse the Magma Men (and possibly blow raspberries).

AC & H and Spot and the army of lizards riding large frogs see a blast of energy emitted by the Armour Of Sol, which alerts them to where the Queen's castle currently is. AC & H grab a lift on the wings of Spot's biplane as the lizard/frog army and other Dog Fighter biplanes head in that direction. Gen'l Eliad orders the God Slayer mounted on a Mecha-Dragonfly to follow them.

The Queen and Loki's magic conflict has wrecked her castle (including some Magma Men) and she blames *him*. The MM's leader Moltar reminds her that a siren signals the approach of the enemy fleet, and the Queen deduces (and makes it clear to us) that Loki made her use the Armour's power in order to expose her location. She decides not to call for aid from the Geomancer because the Armour gives her the power to destroy them all. She leaves the Asgardian to the mercy of Moltar.

Spot's biplane is 1st to reach the castle but they are attacked from above by Eliad on the Mecha-Dragonfly with the Lead Piping, sorry the God-Slayer. And the flying Queen gloats triumphantly.

Travis Lanham does some lettering yet again.

The flashback is written as though Loki was an actual son of Odin and his wife Freya rather than adopted from the Frost Giants Laufey and Farbauti.

The flashback of Loki Laufeyson with Odin is part of his original childhood. He then grew up to be Thor's arch-foe from Journey Into Mystery #85. That version was killed by the Void in Siege 4. A new version was born as Kid Loki in Thor (2007) #617 and tried to be good. But the spirit of old Loki reappeared as a magpie Ikol in JIM #622, and took over Kid Loki's body in #645. But the result was a mixture whose next app was Young Avengers vol 2. And then the Loki: Agent Of Asgard series which climaxed with him helping the Asgardians survive through the end of the 7th Cosmos and the start of the 8th version (2015's Secret Wars event). And then Odin died in Thor (2020) #22.

Geomancer appeared working for Morgan Le Fey in Weirdworld (2016) #45. He doesn't really appear here or next issue, and hasn't been seen again.
